Ron Watches Drag Race Mexico Episode 1

What’s that? Me, blogging again? After almost a whole year of being gone? Why yes!

To be perfectly honest, Alchemy of Souls had lost me by episode 15, and around that time I had an actual paying job that I needed to focus on because nobody but big media conglomerates make a living out of blogging and even then some of them barely scrape by.

I am not funemployed, in case you’re thinking that’s why I’m starting this up again. It’s just that the job that pays is making me want to gnaw my leg off so I thought about doing this again to blow off some steam. So here I am, watching Drag Race Mexico!

All my friends on and off social media know that I love Drag Race. I’m in group chats, I am friends with an actual drag queen. So it really wasn’t a question of whether I would watch Drag Race Mexico or not it was just a question of when I would find the time.

Of course, me being caught in the jaws of late stage capitalism the first thing I take note off is the prize money and how much bigger it’s become since the very first American season. Now they’re willing to shell out the big bucks!

And the Werk Room! That Paramount+ money really coming through because it looks immense. Drag Race Philippines could never. Also I just wanted to bring back this iconic fight.

The first queen to enter the Werk Room is Pixie Pixie and right away the Mexican queens are showing that they are not here to play around because the rotating boobies? The black and white? Stunning.

Serena Morena’s look isn’t my favorite to be honest. But I will be the first person to admit that I am far from being a fashion authority and I may totally be in the wrong. It just doesn’t vibe with me especially since she mentioned that the inspiration is Sailor Moon. It looks better on Instagram when she’s added the accoutrements!

The mug on Margaret Y Ya. It’s giving a Trixie Mattel and Rock M. Sakura fusion and I am here for it. Pixie and Serena describe her as an icon of Mexican drag so it’s entirely possible that she’s been doing that mug for way longer than I would think.

Vermelha Noir is A LOT and I say this in a good way. The mug that reminds me of dragonfruit, the outfit with all the stones, the intro? Perfection. And she’s Pixie Pixie’s drag daughter! I can see the connecting thread!

Regina Voce appears to be a reality show veteran and frankly…I am a little whelmed with her entrance look? It giving entering the Pinoy Big Brother house. And of course her entrance look isn’t on her Instagram. Figures.

Miss Vallarta is also underwhelming for me. At least at first glance. It looks like she’s poking fun at the Puerto Vallarta tourists, but I don’t know enough about the culture to fully appreciate the reference. And once again, fully admitting my own fashion shortcomings, I still feel like this could have been more fashion.

Lady Kero is giving Queen of Hearts tease mixed with all the easily identifiable Mexican stylistic flourishes and I’m not mad at it.

Argennis Drag enters in a bodysuit made to represent a chameleon and while it looks good, I can’t help but feel like it’s more of a challenge look? Like a sci-fi acting challenge and she’d be up against Booberella. And the way she’s being edited makes it seem like she’s either the Porkchop or kept around for the drama. Either way, she didn’t have her entrance look up on her Instagram.

Cristian Peralta is another queen whose entrance look just whelms me. The white bra being visible underneath just didn’t work for me. BUT! It turns out that she’s got a literal wife and kids! Straight? Bisexual? Will this be a topic of discussion? How is that viewed in Mexican culture? It’s fascinating!

No tea no shade but the first thing that went through my mind when Gala Varo walked in was the “For that, the Hamburglar” video.

Matraka is beautiful and colorful and looks like she’s going to be the lipsync assassin, as per the other queens. We shall see!

Valentina finally appears and since she’s non-binary she’s in a dress to meet the queens in the Werk Room, which I believe is a first? Although maybe don’t quote me on that as I have not yet seen Drag Race Thailand. And then Lolita Banana makes her entrance and they have this whole telenovela bitch off and I am LIVING it’s taking me back to Soraya and Maria la del Barrio.

The piñata mini-challenge was giving Dragna but with a bigger budget, to be honest. The piñata outfits on these girls? Amazing. Although apparently a lot of balls slipped out during this challenge. I guess you could say they…let loose.

Margaret Y Ya wins the mini-challenge and also P18,000! Congratulations!

They then move on to the Maxi challenge: hometown runways. Honestly, this is something that I really love about the international versions and I hope every new iteration always starts the season with this. I get to learn a little bit about every country’s culture!

Just like clockwork, we get a little but of Cristian Peralta’s back story in the lead up to the Maxi challenge. As it turns out, his wife met him at a show and then they fell in love! It’s giving Ogie Diaz and honestly if the show wasn’t in Spanish this may as well have been in the Philippines. It’s amazing the things we share with our fellow former colonies!

We finally get to see the Main Stage of Drag Race Mexico and the budget??? This is so big for a first season, especially when you compare it to the very first RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Again, I am no fashion person but I genuinely thought most of the outfits on the runway were really good, especially for a first season and a first episode. They’re doing way better than some of the European queens is all I’m going to say!

But this is still a competition and somebody has to be in the bottom and for the first episode it’s Miss Vallarta and Vermelha Noir and the lip sync? My god it was so uncomfortable. I literally had to look away because it was really obvious they didn’t know the songs. I thought that they would both sashay away but surprise! Valentina and Lolita give both of them a second chance while at the same time making it clear that they both sucked.

Sidenote: I find it hilarious that Valentina of “I’d like to keep it on please” is the one judging lipsyncs. But as one internet commenter pointed out, if there’s a queen who’s going to give you a second chance it’s going to be Valentina. ALSO additionally hilarious is how I can’t even find unedited video of that lipsync so watch these homosexuals reacting to her leaving.

So that’s it for the first episode! I really loved it and can’t wait to watch the second episode THAT JUST AIRED. I will catch up this weekend!
