It’s the finale of Drag Race Mexico! Gotta admit, there were points that this season felt overly long, especially with multiple episodes where nobody went home. But all of that is in the past now as we’re finally at the last episode!
Let’s go!
The top four are back in the Werk Room and Regina Voce doesn’t really think that highly of Matraka as she immediately shades her placement in the top four. Girl, you were both in that bottom two and if my memory serves me right Matraka has more wins than you? Humble yourself a little! Besides, it’s already been telegraphed for most of the season that the crown is for Cristian Peralta to lose.
The next day the queens are thinking what the final challenge is going to be but all of that goes out of the window for me when they have THALIA speaking to the queens. Not in person but still! I used to know all the words to “Piel Morena” when I was kid and I had that album on casette! YES I AM OLD.
So it turns out the final challenge is them lipsyncing and dancing to Thalia’s song “A quién le importa?” which is a 2019 song by her so I am not as familiar with it as I am with her earlier work.
The queens have their final talk with Valentina and Lolita Banana and it’s sponsored by Sprite! Come on corporate sponsorhsip! Who is handling the product partnerships for Drag Race Mexico because having Levi’s and Sprite in one season is major!
Gotta admit, these talks feel too…edited? I felt the same way watching the reunion last week. It seems very rehearsed, which from what we know of reality shows now there is an element of that always, but at least they edit it to hide the seams. It doesn’t come off that way here. Or maybe I may have just been watching too much Drag Race that I’m becoming more aware of it? Something to think about!
This is especially difficult for me because Gala Varo talking about coming out to her parents and Cristian Perlata talking about her daughter really is an emotional and important thing but I think I may have reached a saturation point by watching three Drag Race franchises at the same time.
During choreography rehearsal, the queens get a strict teacher who is very exacting with the moves and for once, Cristian Perlata actually looks like she’s in trouble. But all four of them actually look like they’re in trouble because this choreographer is a drill sergeant. Metaphorically. He even asks the other queens what the spotlighted queen is doing wrong like every strict teacher and instructor you’ve ever had.
FINALLY. Coronation night finally arrives and the performance is okay! I had some issues with the way it was shot because the camera work was so erratic I couldn’t really determine which one of the queens was standing out? It felt like I never got enough footage of any of them to actually make a decision.
The final runway theme is Best Drag and Cristian Peralta’s outfit…is that really her best? She’s worn better outfits in previous episodes and this just looks like a wedding dress to be frank. AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW REGINA VOCE ALSO WALKS DOWN THE RUNWAY IN A WEDDING DRESS. I don’t know if this is a good sign or a bad sign.
FINALLY Matraka comes in with something interesting. She says she wanted to look like she stepped out of a Mayan codex and I don’t know if she succeeded since I am not part of that culture but it sure does look beautiful and stands out from the first two queens. Gala Varo’s dress is okay as well, but it does look like it’s unfinished, at least to my untrained eye. Maybe it’s meant to look that way!
The judges try to edge us by bringing out the little kid photos but we finally get to the meat of the matter — the final lipsync. Which isn’t between two queens but between the top four. This is going to be messy. The only thing I do know from watching it is that Matraka isn’t going to win because she didn’t get a confessional cutaway while she was performing and when she was walking in during the “Bring Back My Girls” part they muted the applause for her. Shady.
Cristian Peralta is all but assured of the crown not just because she had the most wins this season but also because she had a wig cap that had another wig under it and then she cut that wig up. She snuck in those scissors!
Truly a deserved win. She did so well throughout the competition. Do I wish that the production didn’t push her so hard? Sure! But that doesn’t detract from her talent at all. Overall a satisfactory season!
