Ron Watches My Lovely Liar Episode 13

Oh my golly we are so close to the finish line! There’s just three episodes left to go and hopefully I’ll finally get some answers to the questions I’ve had about the show. I say “I” because this drama finished last year and all of you probably already know what happens but I was slaving under capitalist overlords and have only now found the time to watch this.

Let’s go!

When we last left Do Ha and Sol Hee, they were accosting what looks to be Eom Ji’s father, who Do Ha is suspecting of being the one who actually killed her. But since we have three more episodes to fill, it turns out that no, Eom Ji’s father did not kill her. That doesn’t mean he isn’t an asshole though! The short flashback and the fact that he knew information that would have exonerated Do Ha but didn’t share it really drives home that he is not a good person and honestly there is yet to be a good parental figure in this series.

He does do one nice thing at least — he reveals that Deuk Chan’s asshole brother is possibly Eom Ji’s real killer. I say possibly because he didn’t flat out say that he killed her but why would you run away at just an accusation if it isn’t true?

Then we get a chase scene involving Maseratis! Pretty expensive! Obviously they wouldn’t be crashing any of these cars because as big a company as CJ ENM is I don’t think it’s going to spend Hollywood money for a webseries. I have to give them props though because there were moments in the chase scene where I was legitimately anxious. They spent that money really well!

Do Ha finally corners asshole brother but, once again, with three more episodes to fill he manages to escape despite there being a wide open chance to apprehend him. We don’t even get to find out if he really did kill Eom Ji.

When they finally get back to Seoul, Do Ha makes plans to see Deuk Chan and talk to him about his brother, but insists on not bringing Sol Hee along with him. Again with this misplaced chivalry! You wouldn’t even be suspecting Deuk Chan’s asshole brother now if Sol Hee weren’t around when you had him!

Back in Hakcheon, Kang Min is digging into the details of the Eom Ji case, using the notebook that Eom Ho left behind. He’s starting to suspect a cover up but at the same time the witness he’s re-interviewing can’t positively ID that the person he saw way back then was Seung Ju/Do Ha.

Meanwhile, Do Ha finally meets Deuk Chan at the J Entertainment offices and tells him about his encounter with his asshole brother in Hakcheon. Deuk Chan says his brother wouldn’t have been able to kill anyone and ends up asking Do Ha to leave. Honey, sweetie, darling, this is also so very suspicious and fruity of you!

This is what you sound like, Deuk Chan!

Kang Min also has his own confrontation, this time around with his superior. He accuses him of being bribed by Do Ha’s mother, but his superior refuses to budge. Unbeknownst to the both of them, a nosy journalist has been listening to their conversation. Better have that on record though!

The show is tying loose ends now as Sol Hee finally gets to reunite with her father, who may be the lone parent in this series that is a good person. He even tells off Sol Hee’s mother for her! Attaboy! Sol Hee’s mother is doing one of her scams again and frankly 13 episodes in I am over it. In fact, I was already over it several episodes back!

Do Ha, on the other hand, is beginning to suspect Deuk Chan as well. His concerns take a backseat, however, when Sol Hee’s pet turtle goes missing. Of course, this is all just a pretext in the script for Do Ha and Sol Hee to talk about trusting people, with Do Ha offering himself up as the first person that Sol Hee could fully trust. But tt’s hard for Do Ha to keep this end of the bargain especially when Kang Min texts him and immediately asks him to meet him and keep it a secret from Sol Hee. Whatever will Do Ha and Kang Min do together wink wink nudge nudge?

What they do do is talk about what really happened that night with Eom Ji, and as he’s been doing all along, Do Ha just blurts everything out to Kang Min and even subtly jabs at him by saying that he doesn’t have the ability to fool Sol Hee.

Do Ha’s mother is also finding out that her options are getting limited as the corrupt cop’s daughter’s illness gets worse. Because of a bad choice of words — or more like her political double speak — Do Ha’s mother ends up pushing the corrupt cop away from her, further endangering. her political campaign. The corrupt cop meets up with Kang Min and hands over the man’s ring that was found with Eom Ji’s body and admits to him that he was indeed being bribed by Do Ha’s mother.

With the ring in hand, Kang Min visits all the jewelers in the city to find out who had it made. Do Ha and Sol Hee also do some investigating of their own after they are sent to a location where Deuk Chan’s asshole brother is supposed to be but instead find out that the brother has been let go — after Deuk Chan paid off the guards. Do Ha and Sol Hee call Deuk Chan after their encounter with the gang thugs that let the asshole brother go and Deuk Chan just lies to their faces.

Do Ha’s mother also gets her comeuppance because it turns out that the corrupt officer was filming their whole encounter. He’s now given the conversation to the media and the campaign is now dead in the water.

How they’ve handled the storyline of Do Ha’s mother is interesting to me because it’s a great way of delivering the show’s message about truth and trust. If she had only trusted her son was telling the truth, she wouldn’t have had to make up all the lies she did. The truth was on her side, if only she had trusted the person she supposedly loved.

However, the downfall of Do Ha’s mother does introduce a complication. In the video, the corrupt officer says the ring that he found at the crime scene and which he hid was probably Seung Ju’s/Do Ha’s, so know the fickle public believes that it really was Do Ha who killed Eom Ji. What Do Ha decides to do is to finally flat out ask for Sol Hee’s help to find out the location of Deuk Chan’s brother from Deuk Chan himself.

The two of them have a tense stand off at the jazz bar where Do Ha was hiding throughout most of the series. Do Ha discovers a number of things — Deuk Chan knows that the ring found on Eom Ji’s body isn’t Do Ha’s and that Deuk Chan’s asshole brother is turning himself in.

Cliffhanger!
