Ron Watches My Lovely Liar Episode 14

So, the previous episode saw Deuk Chan’s asshole brother turn himself to the police, which would mean that the case of Eom Ji’s death is over and everyone can now move on with their lives.

BUT. We’re only on the 14th episode of a 16-episode K-drama so there’s still one last twist that’s going to happen. Let’s find out what that twist is!

For someone turning himself in for a murder case, Deuk Chan’s asshole brother is pretty blasé about it. But that’s not what’s important here. What’s important is that Do Ha just had his world crumble around him because he’s always trusted Deuk Chan and it turns out Deuk Chan betrayed him.

Look at him he’s pretty devastated. Pretty AND devastated.

But Do Ha eventually gets placated when Deuk Chan truthfully — at least according to Sol Hee — said that he’d save Do Ha over his asshole brother any day of the week. Considering how big of a headache your brother is, I can’t blame you! Also, maybe you’d save Do Ha because you’re a ~homosexual~? Hmm?

Back to the murder! Because the Hakcheon police are currently embroiled in a corruption scandal, they can’t investigate Deuk Chan’s asshole brother despite him turning himself in. Since the asshole brother lives in Seoul, it’s the Seoul police who will be investigating and wouldn’t you know it Kang Min is going to be part of the investigation.

Of course, the news of the surrender ripples out. People are all on their phones looking at the news and Eom Ho — in prison for the stabbing he did — is feeling like an idiot because he spent most of his life hunting the wrong guy. Do Ha, who really should be celebrating being cleared from wrongdoing, still feels uneasy about the whole thing. Thankfully, Sol Hee is here to shake him out of it. She’s right — when will Do Ha allow himself to be happy? He was miserable when he thought he was responsible and now he’s still miserable that he’s been cleared. Time to move on!

While Sol Hee goes back to her tarot cafe to reopen business, Do Ha goes to meet up with his mom, who quite frankly is still not my favorite character. Her senior had the same thought that I had during the last episode — if you had believed your son in the first place you wouldn’t have bribed that police officer and lose the election. She even tries to blame Do Ha for “confusing” her all those years ago and that she didn’t want to be a “pathetic” woman who just sides with her son whatever happens. Do Ha hits her with the “I needed someone who would be on my side unconditionally” bomb and she is floored.

Now, I know this makes sense in the universe of the series and with Do Ha’s character, but history is littered with mothers who sided unconditionally with children who were legitimately horrible people. For the first time in all these episode, I actually kind of feel for Do Ha’s mother.

Deuk Chan is also having a bad day, with J Entertainment losing projects and trainee auditions being cancelled. People are also saying that he framed Do Ha so his brother would be safe and Deuk Chan says that the public doesn’t know his relationship with him.

He also mollifies Syaon, who is obviously also shook up by everything that’s happened. He reassures her that he only found out that his brother was the killer long after the murder, and when Syaon tells him that she’ll stay with the agency if he get on his knees in front of Do Ha. To beg for forgiveness, of course, not whatever perverted things you guys are thinking.

Meanwhile, Sol Hee takes Do Ha to a celebratory “YAY YOU’RE NOT A MURDERER” party arranged by the neighborhood and why is the clapping so out of sync my golly I never knew that that would upset me but it does! He also gets a cute photobook of the times he’s performed at the jazz club and who was taking these photos? Anyway, Do Ha’s found his found family in this group and he’s happy!

The next day, Do Ha reaches out to Deuk Chan and arranges to meet at J Entertainment. Deuk Chan is understandably anxious about the meet up and when the two of them finally get to talk Deuk Chan says he doesn’t care what others think of him but he cares what Do Ha thinks of him COUGH COUGH.

Deuk Chan says he has no one on his side now and Do Ha says that it was the same for him when people still thought he was the killer. And throughout that ordeal it was always Deuk Chan who stood at his side. Do Ha recalled how he only mentioned music once and then Deuk Chan would have the equipment bought and installed the next day and my gosh Do Ha didn’t know he was the trade of the season! He was courting you Do Ha! Do Ha finally asks what he can do for Deuk Chan in this time of need and Deuk Chan asks if he could be present at the upcoming company thing.

While all that is going down, Kang Min is reading the confession submitted (?) by Deuk Chan’s brother and notices a discrepancy. I put the question mark there because I am not quite sure if the confession he’s reading is the brother’s or not because I don’t know how to read Hangul!

Somewhere else in Seoul, Sol Hee is telling Do Ha to go to the company event. He and Deuk Chan have been friends for 15 years, after all, and you shouldn’t just throw away all those years of trust. But was that trust misplaced though? Dun dun dun.

Kang Min is back to interrogating Deuk Chan’s asshole brother and it turns out that he was reading the brother’s written confession and noticed it was different from the answer he gave during interrogation. Got to say, the asshole brother still being a jerk during a police interrogation is a choice.

Anyways, he slips up during the interrogation and reallly, the lesson here is if you’re going to be gay and do crimes, it’s best to do it with accomplices who have more than two working brain cells! Deuk Chan’s asshole brother is not one of those people!

Kang Min shares his concerns about the case with Sol Hee, and he finds it unusual that Deuk Chan would offer up his own brother to the wolves just to save Do Ha’s skin. Kang Min, baby, honey, it’s the homosexual way. Sacrifice everything for cock.

Anyways, both Kang Min and Sol Hee now suspect that it was Deuk Chan who actually killed Eom Ji, but Sol Hee couldn’t bring herself to tell Do Ha her suspicions, especially when he’s made up his mind to go to the company thing Deuk Chan invited him to. Do Ha being at the company thing works in Deuk Chan’s favor, as it looks like the people and employees are feeling reassured about the future of the company.

While Do Ha is doing his part to bring the spirits of J Entertainment’s employees up, Sol Hee and Kang Min are working together to get Deuk Chan’s brother to reveal who the real killer is. And both their suspicions about the asshole brother not being the real killer are proven true because Sol Hee catches him telling a lie. Multiple lies, in fact. And then Sol Hee pulls a Natasha Romanoff and finally gets the asshole brother to admit that it was Deuk Chan that killed Eom Ji.

But it looks like Deuk Chan doesn’t really want to evade justice, at least not for too long. At the company event, he steps down from the CEO position and then names Do Ha as his successor. Which okay maybe makes sense for story purposes but being a good composer doesn’t automatically translate to being a good businessperson? Especially when you do it as a surprise!

But maybe I’m the idiot because Do Ha, of course, refuses the position and instead asks Deuk Chan to remain the CEO, thereby showing that he trusts Deuk Chan to lead the company and that all is well between the two of them. The sneaky manipulative fairy! You gotta applaud him for it!

After learning from the asshole brother that Deuk Chan is hiding evidence in his office, Sol Hee sneaks her way in and is trying to find the password to Deuk Chan’s safe which probably holds that important piece of evidence. As she’s ransacking the place what does she find? A POLAROID OF DO HA AND DEUK CHAN THAT DEUK CHAN HAS BEEN KEEPING ALL THIS TIME. LIKE I’VE BEEN JOKINGLY REFERRING TO YOU AS A HOMOSEXUAL BUT MAYBE YOU ARE?

Look at the look of pining on his face! Deuk Chan, baby, sweetie, honey, nothing good comes out of pining for the straight guy! Another homosexual brought down by the straights! This is homophobia! And Sol Hee even clocks the homosexuality!!!! She realizes the killer didn’t have unrequited love for Eom Ji but unrequited love for Do Ha!

Now I’ve said this in a previous post that I’m too lazy to look for now because this development is blowing my mind, but Deuk Chan actually being gay AND the villain makes narrative sense? The whole theme of the show has been be honest, to yourself and to others, and Deuk Chan brought all of this upon himself because he couldn’t be true to himself about his feelings for Do Ha.

He comes out to Sol Hee and begs her not to tell Do Ha but DO HA WAS ALSO THERE OH MY HEART IS CRUSHED. Deuk Chan. Baby. My misunderstood homo. Oh the world has wronged you. Oh you didn’t deserve this.

When the police arrive to arrest him Deuk Chan make a run for it and I can totally understand! You just got accidentally outed to your straight crush! Whose girlfriend you murdered! Totally valid! And then he Deuk Chan tries to kill himself by getting into a car accident. Again! Totally valid!

I’m sorry everyone this is the Deuk Chan show to me now.
