Ron Watches RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 16 Episode 10

Another week, another RuPaul’s Drag Race episode!

I’ve had a generally good week this past…uh…week so I am going into this episode feeling really good! I hope it’s fun and entertaining and delivers another moment like Mhi’ya sending Plasma home!

The queens are back from Plasma’s elimination and Mhi’ya is feeling more than a little confident because the girl’s immediate reaction is amazement at her ability to be able to do flips while wearing a gown.

But the good feelings don’t last for very long when Dawn asks the girls whether the top six now is the top six they had in their head when they first walked in. It’s all well and good until Morphine gets in a “Sapphira made your dress” jab at Mhi’ya and Mhi’ya has no brakes and immediately resorts to whatever it was she said that had to be bleeped for YouTube. The two get into a little argument and Q just pours gas onto the fire by saying that she’d love to see the Morphine versus Mhi’ya lip sync which just tells me that this week’s lip sync is going to be Morphine versus Mhi’ya.

Also Sapphira and Nymphia “eating popcorn” while the whole argument was going down? Somebody turn that into a gif stat.

The next day, the girls are horny with Q and Dawn saying that they’ve been having sex dreams about some of the girls? Which one of the girls? They’ll never tell. Although the editing implies Dawn is dreaming about Nymphia and Plane.

This week’s Maxi Challenge is a performance-based one, with the queens tasked to write their own verses for the “inspirational anthem” Power. Now, while Nymphia and her group won the girl group challenge, Nymphia’s lyrics were written by Megami and boy you in danger Nymphia if you don’t come up with something this time around!

The song will also be featured on Werq the World, which quite honestly doesn’t seem like an impactful thing to me, at least for the season 16 queens? Because it’s going to be other queens performing their verses UNLESS this is a hint that the season 16 girls will be part of the tour?

The queens get to writing and Morphine is putting her whole Morphussy in it but at the same time is also gunning for Plane Jane’s immunity potion, which she only has until this week to use. Morphine, just like Mhi’ya, is also feeling her oats and is reading people left and right with Plane Jane right beside her adding fuel to the fire.

Sapphira continues being mother and shares that she’s thinking of adding the Black community’s national anthem into her own verse. I don’t know how that’s going to play out but I do know that Sapphira can sing and perform so I feel like it’s going to work out for her!

Nymphia, as I expected, is not doing well since she’s already said before that she is not a writer at all. She goes so far as saying that maybe she should learn the lip sync song now and girl if you don’t come up with even a passable verse I don’t know what outfit is going to save you from the bottom two.

Once they start recording the tracks Mhi’ya immediately stands out as someone who is not going to have a good time during the Maxi Challenge as she just rhymed equal with…equal. Leland is coaching her on how to make it a moment but do we honestly think that Mhi’ya is getting the instructions she’s being given?

Plane is also unexpectedly not doing well during the recording, constantly flubbing the words. But all of that is immediately overshadowed by Nymphia who’s recording just had me SCREAMING and CRINGING oh my god. At least this may be the vulnerability the judges are looking for?

On the sidelines, Plane is telling Dawn that she doesn’t plan on giving anybody the immunity potion and most especially Nymphia who aside from the lack of writing skills is a pretty strong competitor. And then Dawn tells Plane to tell Nymphia that she’s going to giver the potion and then NOT give her the potion and that little elf is evil.

Just from the recording I know Sapphira is winning this, my golly. Q says she can carry a tune but I don’t know about that from what we see in the recording. You may think Sapphira is your biggest competition but Sapphira definitely isn’t thinking that swear to god.

Dawn continues to be menace in the confessionals when she starts calling Q’s hands Barbie hands. THE FUCK THAT WAS FUNNY. And what makes it even funnier is DAWN CAN’T DANCE EITHER. THE AUDACITY. And then Dawn does it again when she compares Morphine’s neck bobbing to a chicken AND THEN THE EDITORS ADD CHICKENS CLUCKING THE SHADE OF IT ALL.

And Dawn gets yet another moment to show the vulnerability the judges are looking for when she gets to talk about her mental health with Nymphia. She’s got quite the number of mental health diagnoses and I know that I joke about this being her moment to show the judges some vulnerability but it really is impressive how she’s managed to work through all of that to get to where she is now in the competition.

The performance starts and I actually liked Morphine’s performance! Nymphia’s verse is only okay and is definitely overshadowed by Plane’s verse BUT Nymphia’s really smart about her outfit because it really brings attention to her and since she’s a good dancer it steals the spotlight from Plane even if Plane wrote the better verse.

Q also does well enough but Sapphira, as Law Roach said during his time on the judging panel, just squatted on Q’s performance and took a shit on it.

We get to the runway and Sapphira, once again, just squatted on everyone’s outfits and took a shit on them. That blue gown with the blue hair? AMAZING.

BUT THAT’S NOT THE ONLY OPEN MOUTH MOMENT THIS EPISODE BECAUSE PLANE JANE GIVES NYMPHIA THE IMMUNITY POTION. WHAT? Even Nymphia’s surprised! What is Plane Jane’s plan? As much as I love Nymphia, why let one of your strongest competitors stay on in the competition?

It makes the decision even more suspect when Plane gets a less than stellar critique compared to her previous outings. Not that the queens got overtly negative critiques this time around, the judges were pretty much very complimentary, but like they’ve said in past seasons, the judges are really splitting hairs this time around.

During the deliberations you kind of already sense what’s going to happen with the lip sync because they were complimentary of everyone! So when Ru finally announces that Morphine and Sapphira are the queens lip syncing for the the win it’s surprising but also not? If that makes sense?

Once the lip sync starts these two queens are immediately hobbled by the song choice, in my opinion. But that still doesn’t stop Sapphira from, once again, taking a shit on Morphine and taking her second win in the competition.
