Ron Watches Secret Ingredient Episode 5

Oh my god am I seriously going to actually be able to watch this on time? Because it looks like that’s what’s going to happen!

Let’s go check out Secret Ingredient episode 5!

Things finally came to a head between Ha Joon and Maya in the previous episode after a nosy Filipino from Maya’s past spilled all about Ha Joon heading to the Philippines to scare off Maya’s creditor and pay off her debts, which Maya did not like at all. The lying, I mean, because I think she may be a little happy that she doesn’t have debt anymore. I know I would be!

Putting this in again because it really is so funny. To me.

This may just be funny to Filipinos but the first scene we get of Maya in this episode is here doing that wall slide that we always see characters in great distress do on Filipino soap operas. Sorry but the moment that happened I already had a hard time taking the scene seriously. Which isn’t to say that Julia is bad at it. She’s good! It’s just that I’ve seen that done so many times that it’s reflex to find it humurous.

Ha Joon, on the other hand, looks to be finally going back to Seoul to face his responsibilities. But before we get to that, we’re treated to a flashback where we find out that Ha Joon went to the Philippines as a child to learn English and wouldn’t you know it he was friends with a young Maya. Just like I predicted. I do like that this show recognizes that a lot of Koreans go here to study English or at the very least are taught English online by Filipinos because the way some of these Koreans look down on Filipinos you’d think they learned English straight out of the womb or something.

Anways, back to Ha Joon’s childhood! Turns out sometime in the past kid Maya fed him sisig at a carinderia, which was how they first met. It also made him act like a little bitch to his mom who just wanted to feed him when he was already full and just ended up getting her feelings hurt instead.

Ha Joon’s driver keeps taking him to the carinderia where Maya cooks and of course the two of them end up becoming friends. She even suggests he cook for her mom — cook being used loosely here because they’re making sandwiches — and we get some good and juicy product placement.

The amount of mayo they used in the egg sandwich I’m gonna vom.
As #TeamSinigang I had to add this product placement too.

Anyways, Maya and Ha Joon have this generally idyllic childhood together and are you telling me that Ha Joon remembered all of this and has been crushing on Maya since forever? And Maya forgot all about it? But we do find out why Maya hates liars, because back as a kid her father told her he’d come back and he never did. And we get to see what actually happened that triggered Ha Joon in the previous episode. And Maya is once again left behind by another man my goodness this poor kid.

We then get back to the present where Ha Joon has a choice to board that plane and go back to Korea or call Maya and explain everything. And he chooses to call Maya instead! But what about all that chaebol money?
