Yes, I am very much aware that this is a day late but the past work week has been busy and I had to set this aside for the meantime while I got my paying gigs in order. But I’m free to watch this now!
We saw Afrodite bid us all adieu in the previous episode of Drag Race France and the remaining queens do the requisite “Oh we loved her”, “Oh now I realize there will be eliminations every week.” It’s practically part of the script of every franchise. I am a little amused at the black and white video they’re showing of Afrodite like she died or something. Which I find out is a visual joke to how Magnetica is talking about her. A joke I get!
The next day the queens literally bow down to Norma Bell’s framed picture, after which they star plotting her demise. Edeha Noire says she’ll be the one to dethrone her and there’s a funny bit of wordplay about big steps, big feet, and big cocks that I feel I would find even funnier if I actually understood French and didn’t have to read subtitles.
The mini challenge is a…teen party? That’s what the subtitles said! The queens are asked to get into drag in the space of five minutes and they’re playing high queen? I am guessing that it’s a French version of Langit Lupa or something because they have to stand on top of something when the music stops. I gotta admit it was funny for a bit but quickly runs out of steam for me.
Either way, Misty Phoenix wins a slow dance with Nicky Doll and honestly I wish these mini challenges lead to at least an advantage in the Maxi Challenges. I just can’t get into it! Misty can’t even determine the order of the talent show, which is this week’s Maxi Challenge.
The queens start talking about what they’re going to do for the challenge show and how the judges for this episode are legit talents in their fields. Guillaume Diop is the first black lead of the Paris Opera Ballet while Virginie Efira won a César Award for Best Actress. This isn’t like Leah Remini or something.
While they’re talking about that, Edeha reveals she’s the third mom to a child. Maybe it’s the translation but I didn’t quite understand how it happened? Edeha said she wasn’t the sperm donor but she says she made the child but didn’t acknowledge the paternity so the moms could have the child so I think that means she had sex with the other girl? That’s what I’m getting from the subtitles!
Magnetica then shares her story of finding out only last year that the man she thought was her father wasn’t really her father after all. And she points out that if her not biological father can lover her unconditionally, why can’t people do that for their own biological children?
Perseo and Misty also share their happy gay childhoods and Magnetica points out that it doesn’t always have to be drama all the time for queer children and their families. Tell that to mainstream media because all the queer stories that get greenlit either for movies or books always seem to be about drama!
I don’t know if the Season 3 girls have a runway for this episode but the Season 2 girls watching their talent show did and PICHE. Piche walking in as Bearded Voldemort? THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT.
The talent show stars and the judges’ faces when Perseo does a split with her platform boots on I wish WowPresentsPlus allowed screenshots. They were gagged and gooped. That said, I feel like no Canary Island queen has surpassed Drag Sethlas’ talent show performance.
Edeha Noire is up next and I say this in the most positive way possible but it was very Vice Ganda MMFF movie comedy? The good early ones, not the ones that came after Sisterakas.
Lula Strega is the next act and it reminded me of the spoken word piece from She’s All That. I don’t know whether this was a good performance or not!
Meanwhile, Norma Bell does a quick change sequence while doing what I assume are traditional dances from Reunion Island. She’s confident that the jury is going to love it which just tells me that she won’t be on the top this episode.
Ruby on the Nail is up next and I genuinely thought she was doing a comedy bit but apparently she was meant to do a serious piano performance and she was genuinely fucking it up! Lula Strega you’re safe this episode!
Leona Winter has the crowd clapping for her with a beautiful performance of an opera piece — it’s familiar but I don’t know the title! — and then Magnetica also sings live. But the show is completely stolen by her back-up dancer that slips on a cloth on the stage I am so sorry I laughed.
Le Filip delivers a really funny stand-up routine even if I was reading the subtitles throughout. I wish I could understand it in the original French because everybody else was enjoying it too. Misty Phoenix then closes the show with a dance routine that has got to hurt her knees. I’m with Ruby on the Nail with this one, why slam it onto the stage you still have a life ahead of you!
It turns out that the queens still have a runway and the theme is Living Couture. Most of queens interpreted it as outfits with moving parts, as can be seen in the outfits of Misty Phoenix and Lula Strega specifically. I do have to say that Lula’s outfit doesn’t seem as impressive if you’ve already seen Plastique’s angel outfit for All Stars 9.
Magnetica has this fascinating black and white outfit that had a mechanical thing in the back but the photo she has on her Instagram doesn’t have that. But it was fascinating during the runway! Also I got spoiled when I looked it up so I guess we know who goes home! I’m thinking it’s Ruby on the Nail and her in the bottom so what could have that lip sync song been that sent her packing
Norma Bell is the final queen on the runway and unfortunately, her volcano mechanism didn’t work out for her. At least Marina Summers had a more successful volcano runway!
It’s time for the judges critiques and they really loved Perseo’s performance which is totally valid! And it really does look like it’s going to be Ruby on the Nail and Magnetica in the bottom. The other top queen looks like Leona Winter.
Perseo, Leona Winter, and Le Filip are the top queens with Perseo ending up the winner and getting €1,000 as well! I guess this is a season-wide thing! Congrats on the queens finally getting money!
Ruby and Magnetica are indeed the bottom two queens and you immediately know from the lip sync song that Magnetica isn’t going to win this. They wanted Magnetica out.
