Drag Race Mexico is back for a second season! After crowning Cristian Peralta in season one, Lolita Banana is back is crown Mexico’s Next Drag Superstar!
But where is Valentina, you ask? Replaced by Taiga Brava! Now let’s watch the episode, which I am getting to a few days late!
Drag Race Mexico and its enormous Werk Room is back and the first queen to enter is Ava Pocket looking like gay Guy Fieri? I dunno, it’s maybe the flames and the black? It’s just the vibe that I was getting!
She’s followed into the Werk Room by Elektra, who enters the Werk Room in an aquatic-themed outfit. Even her confessional outfit is sailor-themed. Not gelling with the branding there but she is gorgeous either way.
Up next is Nina de la Funete who I think is a big name since Elektra and Ava were all mouth agape when she entered. And it turns out that Elektra and Nina know each other and have worked together. That’s nice.
And then we get Horacio Potasio who has got a meaty tuck and you know what I am not mad at it. Not mad at all. She’s got the face, the body, and the bulge. Which apparently is a family thing because she’s Gala Varo’s drag daughter! Gala Varo, whose bulge also featured prominently in the previous season!
Suculento is up next and…well, let’s just say I don’t know about that entrance outfit. After you get over the alien arms it’s basically…an ill-fitting top and underwear? I don’t like it! She says she’s not normal drag but can it at least be drag that fits you? And it turns out that Nina is her drag mother! She must be a spoiled child because Nina, how could you?
The next queen to enter is Maria Bonita and well, it wasn’t very bonita. Why does this feel like a step down from the first season? I feel like I was immediately floored by the outfits from back then, but I’ll have to read back because I may be remembering with rose-colored glasses.
Jenary Bloom is up next and she kinda looks like Angelica’s doll from Rugrats. I’m sorry but that’s the first thing that came to mind! A fashion version, but still!
FINALLY we get something as striking as the outfits from last season with Ignus Ars entrance look. The whole Rorschach-inspired out with the white eyes? Chef’s kiss. Although she should have acted like that whole trip was part of her entrance.
Because Ignus Ars’ look was so striking, Unique walking in felt like a letdown.Like…you do not look Unique at all, let’s be for real. Jeans and a stuffed toy top. JEANS. It’s a boot for me.
Garçonne is up next and looks like she’s going to be the spooky queen. It’s a really nice entrance look but in my head the entrance looks from Season 1 were showstoppers right from the get-go. Maybe I’m misremembering but the lingering feelings I have of the first season was damn, those outfits are great. And look Garçonne is Nina’s drag daughter as well!
Luna Lansman is the next queen to enter the Werk Room and that face. Her makeup looks fabulous that you kind of overlook that her entrance look is just a bodysuit.
Leexa Fox entrance look is…no Malaysia Babydoll Fox, let’s just say that. I don’t know why I’m being so nitpicky with these group of queen but I just remember loving the entrance looks of the Season 1 girls and I’m not feeling these new ones!
And you know what, I dug deep and looked at my post about the first episode of Drag Race Mexico and maybe I was just remembering Pixie Pixie’s entrance because apparently I was mostly whelmed with the entrance looks back then as well? Hmmm.
Eva Blunt enters and it’s not so much the outfit but the demeanor that’s really striking. She really strode into the Werk Room like a bad bitch and I like it! And the queens all say that she’s a legend so I’m looking forward to how she performs! Also she’s got a dick pic out? I swear there was another queen from the first season who had a dick pic out because they kept talking about it
That’s all the girls and Lolita Banana finally walks in and she really is a tiny bundle of Mexican hotness when she’s out of drag. I’m into it! And this season, like I said up top, she’s hosting with Queen of the Universe‘s Taiga Brava! And they’re still handing out a huge cash prize! P550,000!
The Maxi Challenge involves them getting their makeup off? I don’t know yet but the queens start de-dragging for it. Is the first Maxi Challenge quick drag? That’s interesting! But it isn’t quick drag! It’s a sewing challenge. Right off the bat! Damn. And that’s on top of the hometown looks that is usually an international season staple.
After the customary squabbling over the materials the queens get to designing in the Werk Room and Garçonne immediately sets herself up by saying she used to work as a wardrobe designer. That’s the kiss of death, girl. Along with saying that you don’t know how to sew.
Lolita Banana and Taiga Brava do their walkthroughs and Horacio Potasio looks to be in danger because both hosts are already saying that she and her drag mother Gala Varo both don’t know how to sew. And they weren’t that impressed with Horacio’s sketches either.
Jenary looks to be in danger as well because Taiga flat out asks her if she’s going to be the first one to leave. Damn. And we also get some tsismis — or more appropriately, chisme — from Lolita and Taiga as they reveal that Visa from Drag Race España and Ava Pocket used to be together. ¡Escandalo!
Maria is also another queen marked for the bottom because as she’s talking to Lolita and Taiga her background music is literally foreboding. She’s either going to be the bottom queen or somehow get to the top to pay that music off.
After the walkthroughs we see how they’re setting up Garçonne for failure. She said she was the sewer and designer in the group and now all the queens are approaching her asking for help. I can see the storyline now: She won’t have time to work on her own stuff and she’ll end up with the shitty outfit instead.
And in what is probably the most egregious case of producer-prompted conversation, Jenary gets asked about wanting to transition and that literally came out of nowhere? There wasn’t even an awkward lead up to it? Just BAM! Transitioning, have you thought about it? Or maybe it’s the editor’s fault. That aside, it was an emotional talk from Jenary and hopefully it changes her family’s mind? Especially if being unable to transition is messing up her mental state.
I’m going to give this to Garçonne — her first outfit on the runway looked gorgeous. Of course, the real challenge is the outfit she made for the challenge because she brought this outfit here. But at least we know she’s really got a discerning eye.
Horacio Potasio’s coral dress is…white stuff on a bodysuit, I’m sorry. And if the outfit she made isn’t any better then she may just find herself in the bottom two this episode. And then she’s followed by Ava Pocket who’s dressed like Kandy’s Alien Judy? Okay maybe that’s an exaggeration but is Tampico a UFO hotspot?
Ignus Ars says her look is representative of her hometown and while I do like it it’s also a little…too simple? Which I know is a dumb thing to say considering the makeup she did and the horns but it was the vibe the outfit was giving.
Nina de la Fuente’s runway look is Mexico’s National Lottery lady and I think our local equivalent is the Yakult lady that used to make the rounds with their carts? Although even that may be a dated reference because I don’t know if there are still Yakult ladies around.
Jenary looks gorgeous in her dress and my only complaint is that I feel like it should be more drag? But that’s a personal preference and I’m not even a fashion gay so really why should Jenary listen to me? As to how this represents where she comes from, she says it’s an agave dress and I’ll let the Mexicans judge how authentic the representation is.
Maria Bonita has this unfortunate habit of revealing into a blander outfit than the one she had on top? I dunno I felt like the wedding gown along with the makeup had more impact than what she had on underneath.
Leexa Fox is…well, she was on the runway. And quickly eclipsed by Elektra Vandergeld in this grape-y(?) outfit. It looked gorge on the runway and looked gorge on Instagram as well.
Considering her entrance look, I was kinda whelmed by Eva Blunt’s first runway look? Maybe it’s more impactful if you know what it’s referencing but it was a little meh to me especially since Unique came after her in a more obviously striking bullfighter outfit. Is the bullfighter idea unique? Not really but it was definitely more impactful than Eva’s outfit. And Eva brought that outfit to the show, she didn’t make it from scratch!
Now we get to the looks they made and Garçonne says her outfit is an Eastern vampire and…it’s not. Like if you’re going with East Asian vampire you do the jiangshi. Also the way she talked up her fashion credentials I was expecting something…more.
Horacio Potasio’s out fit was…well we saw her underwear so I guess that’s that. And then she’s followed by Ava Pocket who was…also there on the runway. Those two underwhelming looks basically made it easier for Ignus Ars to look so much better by default.
I wish Luna’s look fit her better but considering everything else that came before, her look is actually one of the better ones to go down the runway. Nina’s look I think also benefits from the ones that came before it because my initial reaction was “Pretty!”
Jenary’s look…I don’t know if the reveal look was actually good or the dress on top was just bad. It kind looked like Ruby On The Nail’s look from Drag Race France episode three!
Maria Bonita’s self-made outfit actually looks better than the one she brought? I don’t know what that says about her and her chances in the competition but there it is. Leexa Fox’s self-made outfit also looked better than the one she brought to the competition. Huh.
I feel like Elektra is going to be one of the top queens this episode because that sailor outfit looked good! It wasn’t better than her first look but considering the limited time she had to make it, it looks great. That’s two strong looks from her.
Eva Blunt’s outfit looks good but definitely don’t live up to the way the other queens were gassing her up? Maybe if I wasn’t expecting more from her I wouldn’t be so whelmed. Unique continues to not live up to her name because that outfit was just whelming.
Unique’s name looks even more ridiculous considering Suculenta follows her with a cat face. Now is Suculenta’s outfit any good? I dunno! But at least she looks different from what you expect!
The episode’s top and bottom queens are Garçonne, Ava Pocket, Ignus Ars, Leexa Fox, Elektra, and Suculenta. Elektra is the clear winner because the judges loved both her looks, while Ava Pocket is definitely in the bottom because even the judges didn’t understand her alien look and they’re Mexican just like her.
Elektra gets the first win of the season and P18,000! I wish all the Drag Race editions had enough money to give cash prizes every episode! Meanwhile, Ava Pocket and Ignus Ars are in the bottom and Ignus Ars changed into a different outfit. I didn’t know you could do that on a regular season!
The lip sync starts and it is a marked improvement from last season’s first lip sync. I’d say it’s even better than some of the All Stars 9 lip syncs we’ve been served so far! Unfortunately, somebody has to go home and this time it’s Ignus Ars.
All in all, I think this was an okay first episode? Can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings us!
