Ron Watches The Boyfriend Episode 2

You guys don’t know how much I just wanted to binge all the episodes available when it first came out. But I have a professional life that I need so I can eat food! But now I can sneak this episode in so let’s get into it!

Back in the first episode, we saw a lot of malicious gay faggotry go down as Dai brazenly tells Shun that he’s into him but then immediately fawns over go-go boy Usak. These homosexuals!

The second episode starts with Usak finally moving into the house and after a little introduction to the group he proceeds to make a chicken smoothie. And…well if that’s what it takes to get that body I am happy the way I am I guess.

Their coffee truck also arrives and it’s cute! They take photos inside and outside the coffee truck and they truly give off the “You’re going to ask for the code for this gay porn flick any moment now” vibe. Or maybe I am just starved for touch. Either way!

They start practicing how to run the coffee truck and while Gensei is making one Ryota tells him that he should think that he wants to really make it for that person so that the desire to make delicious coffee comes across and my boy is blushing. Although I have to admit, this has been bugging me since I watched the first episode, but the moustache makes him look a little like one member of the Japanese Imperial Family I’M SORRY.

The boys also get told that they have to live on a budget of ¥200,000 or ¥6,600 per day. That’s P73,854 for the month or P2,436 per day. I mean I guess that’s doable since they don’t have to pay for rent or anything? In fact if rent and utilities isn’t included P73,854 for a month is pretty cushy, I think!

We get shots of the guys doing self-care and we get this ridiculous shot of Dai and Shun working out in a position I can only call as a General Patronage 69. Like come on show, you know what the filthy homosexuals will be thinking. Dai’s even making a face!

The boys finally begin running the coffee truck and each one of them is going to have a specific shift to cover. And whoever’s on shift can pick their partner and Ryota is up first.

AND THEN WE GET THE OPENING CREDITS AND MY GHAD? I can’t find a video of it anywhere but it’s so cute!

Ryota picks Gensei. So he really was hitting on him! They arrive at the location where they’ll be selling their wares and they immediately charm the two ladies who are their first customers. At the end of the shift, Ryota tells Gensei that he was his only choice when it came to picking a partner and Gensei is smitten, I swear.

Back at the Green Room, Shun has a headache and Dai has the perfect opportunity to work on that hurt/comfort trope. How will this play out in the greater story? We’ll see!

After a whole day of working, Ryota and Gensei come back with ¥1,700 in sales. Is that on top of the amount they’re supposed to live on? I think so because during the first episode they said they could do whatever they want with the coffee truck proceeds.

But let’s not worry about that because Ryota made a good point when they were writing letters to each other on the coffee truck logbook or something. He points out that it may reveal who wrote letters to who in the first episode and Gensei believes that Ryota was the one who wrote him the letter because the handwriting is the same and Gensei starts thinking that Ryota is interested in him. BUT we as viewers know that Ryota wrote to Dai. The malicious gay faggotry of this show!

The next day is Dai’s trun to run the coffee truck and of course this homosexual picks Shun. THE MALICIOUS GAY FAGGOTRY IS OFF FAR TOO MUCH. In the confessionals Dai is all “Damn we were so close we could’ve kissed 100 times” and baby. BABY. The production, because they live for the drama, adds so many shots of Dai just looking at Shun. The mess. THE MESS. I love mess.

Back at the Green Room, Usak, Gensei, and Ryota are in the sauna and Gensei says he’s never seen such muscle this close. I have watched this movie and this was definitely on a site that is not Netflix.

Usak asks the two of them if they’re being their true selves on the show and apologizes for not being able to join the guys when they play games at night because he needs to work out. He also confesses that he’s not sure what his true self is and oh boy. Are we going to have an identity crisis happen on the show?

In the confessionals, Usak says that most of his relationships ended because he’s unable to express his true feelings. He says he’s never exposed his inner self to others and hopes that his stay at the Green Room helps him express himself to others. The panel correctly points out that it’s hard to expose your real self when you’re a public figure because there’s an image people have of you in their head and that image is what brings you the money. The negative sides of the capitalism indeed.

Back at the coffee shop, Shun and Dai earned ¥9,000 and FUCK. That’s even bigger than their daily budget! Is it obvious that I am a slave to capitalism because their earnings are what got me excited?

Of course, the homosexuals Shun and Dai are interested about each other’s dating history. Shun has seriously dated three guys in his short life, with the first one being 30, the second 28, and the third 23. The third guy was really in love with him, but they broke up because Shun started getting “lofty ideas”. I don’t know what that means!

Back at home, Shun plays Jenga with Ryota and Gensei and the loser has to say who they’re interested in. The potential for messiness is right there but let’s see what happens! Ryota ends up losing the game and says he does have someone he likes but he hasn’t said anything to the person yet and Gensei is right beside him thinking “Yeah, yeah, he’s talking about me” and the gag is RYOTA’S NOT TALKING ABOUT HIM I AM GAGGING. RYOTA’S TALKING ABOUT SHUN. AND HE’S SAYING THIS AFTER SENDING DAI A LETTER IN THE FIRST EPISODE. I LOVE MESS.

They show a confessional of Ryota talking about why he likes Shun and then follows it up with a Gensei confessional where he says he’s fine with Ryota being more physical with him and being more forward and BABY. I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

The next day is a different kind of pain as the boys talk about the finances and how Usak’s chicken consumption alone is one-third of the budget. Usak gets a talking to because he literally takes up a part of the budget that should feed the rest of the cast and as a pewr, I do kinda agree with Dai!

The next shift goes to Taeheon and he also picks Shun. Goddam Shun is popular! While those two go out and sell coffee, Gensei is giving Dai a haircut and Dai is singing Shun praises and Gensei is enabling it by saying Shun couldn’t stop smiling when Dai picked him. THE MALICIOUS GAY FAGGOTRY IS FAR TOO MUCH.

Taeheon and Shun earn ¥3,250 for the day and Shun tells Taeheon that he didn’t expect him to be picked as the partner for the day. Taeheon tells him that he chose Shun for his “unfounded confidence” and that the fact that Shun loves himself means he’s ready to be loved by someone. That is a line if I ever heard one but it’s a good line!

Meanwhile, there’s conflict between the house accountants Dai and Gensei and Usak as Usak asks if he can buy two kilos of chicken for ¥1,500. But it doesn’t really blow up into a full-blown fight as Usak manages to find a cheaper alternative. Yay, I guess? I just cannot get excited about a chicken smoothie, I’m sorry.

Later that night, the boys decide to play a game where the penalty is the same as in the club — you tell someone you trust who you’re interested in among the group. Shun loses and decides to tell Ryota who he’s into not knowing that Ryota is into him. And he tells Ryota that he’s into Dai THE CACKLE I JUST LET OUT.

But we do finally get resolution to the Chekov’s hurt/comfort trope earlier on in the episode as Durian points out that may be what finally won Shun over to Dai’s side.

Gensei is the next person taking on the shift and obviously he’s going to pick Ryota who I feel will be more receptive now that he knows he doesn’t have a chance with Shun. BUT SURPRISE HE PICKS DAI. Gensei says that he and Dai are like the best of friends and that he didn’t pick Ryota just yet because it would mean that they both like each other. Honey, Ryota doesn’t like you! Oh this show is messy.

Gensei and Dai earn ¥4,100 — sorry I am a poor who is fixated on this — and start talking about who exactly Shun said he liked among the group. Dai is feeling pretty confident though since Shun spent the whole time when they were playing games last night resting on his arm WHILE DAI HAD NO SHIRT ON. Dai said his heart was pounding and I bet something else was pounding, huh, huh, wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

Back at the Green Room, Shun tells Ryota that he’s not going to fully commit to his feelings for Dai until Dai shows him that Shun is his final-final choice. You go, baby, know your worth! But the added twist is that while he’s having this conversation with Ryota Ryota is considering telling Shun about his feelings for him. This is so delicious.

We then get a scene of Shun and Dai on the couch and Shun is being sulky after seeing photos that would be perfect for dating apps — does Grindr exist in Japan? Although Grindr isn’t for dating, I guess — and Dai is rubbing his finger on Shun’s leg and I CAN’T. Shun says the photos are “really extreme” and I AM CURIOUS.

So we finally get Shun’s past relationship back story. He’s been with player types before and it’s always never worked out and if Dai is starting to look very much like a player then maybe he shouldn’t pursue his feelings for him. BUT BABY IF YOU’VE HAD MULTIPLE PLAYERS IN YOUR PAST DATING HISTORY MAYBE YOU’RE THE PROBLEM? You’re the one picking them! Not to be victim-blamey or anything!

Shun is literally crying about it and oh the magic of youth! Where everything is so intense especially with gay people since we spend most of our teen years repressing all of that and we only get into all of that mess way past our teen years. And I would think it’s even worse in Japan because even the straight people are repressed!

Dai tries to reassure Shun that he’ll be safe with him and…I don’t know! Sure, cultural norms may be a bit different in Japan but I also feel like as gay people we not only get to choose our own families but also get to live within or outside of whatever cultural norms are imposed on us? I was going somewhere with this but I forgot my point, I’m sorry!

Kazuto is up next with the coffee shop shift and he picks Ryota as his shift partner. On the way to their venue the two talk about themselves and their backgrounds Kazuto also says he tried making Usak’s chicken smoothie and found it disgusting and Kazuto baby we’re meant to be we think the same, etc., etc.

Kazuto and Ryota end up earning ¥11,600 and KAZUTO BABY I DO. I’LL DO THE CLEANING I’M READY TO BE A HOUSEWIFE. Get you a good-looking man who rakes in the coins! AND HE’S A LONGTERM RELATIONSHIP KIND OF GUY. The guys are missing out Kazuto is the catch here!

Kazuto then shares how he always thought why he was born this way and that as the eldest son, he was supposed to take over his family’s farm. Having to give up on those expectations made him feel a lot of guilt and shame and boy isn’t that the universal gay experience, no matter where you are in the world.

Back at the Green Room, the boys talk about date ideas and Shun is keeping quiet and sulking in a corner. While he and Ryota are washing dishes he tells Ryota that he can’t even look at Dai and Ryota, baby, you are just hurting yourself here. Are you going to give him advice?

The next day, it’s Shun’s turn to man the coffee truck and the person he picks as his shift partner is…a cliffhanger! Why do I need to work to survive I wanna watch the third episode now!
