Ron Watches Deadpool & Wolverine

So I had to go outside to pick up something that was being repaired for what seems like a bajillion years now and there was an inordinate amount of time where I had to wait so I thought I would watch the new Deadpool movie. Is it any good? Let’s see!

Full disclosure: I liked the first movie but for one reason or another, I can’t remember now, I was unable to watch the second movie. And since I’m no longer as proficient with piracy as I used to be, I never really got around to watching it, so I walked into this movie with a whole two hours worth of story missing.

If anybody thought that was going to be an issue during the movie, well rest assured it is not. I feel like I’ve gotten enough information via osmosis and also the movie doesn’t really make a lot of references to the second one for it to be a problem.

Even if you haven’t seen the more recent Marvel properties that the movie makes callbacks to, it really isn’t going to be a problem either since it’s easy enough to connect the dots and since Deadpool often breaks the fourth wall he points out which other show or movie you need to look at to get the reference.

HOWEVER, seeing the different Marvel properties — even the non-Disney ones — really make the viewing experience much more enjoyable, especially since the movie has a buttload of cameos that a lot of people probably know by now because it’s been three days since the movie premiered. There’s a lot of them and as an old person I’ve seen most of them and definitely got the jokes about the personal lives of those actors as well.

In fact, it’s that nostalgia and the throughline of this being a goodbye movie is what made the movie enjoyable for me. I don’t think it really advanced anything when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and maybe that’s a good thing — but rather it bid goodbye to all those properties that Marvel had to throw in the trash heap. The mid-credits scene/s was especially touching and as someone who watched the first X-Men movies in cinemas when I was a teenager, as well as those other forgotten Marvel properties, it really felt like saying goodbye to my childhood.
