While I remember the fans liking this live action adaptation, I don’t remember what the critics thought of it at the time. Either way, so far I’m with the fans on this one. This has been an enjoyable watch so far!
The last episode‘s cliffhanger was the revelation that Garp is actually Luffy’s grandfather. It must be awkward when they have family reunions! Also does Garp see Koby as his surrogate grandson or something? We get a flashback of Garp trampling on Luffy’s childhood dream of becoming a pirate but still being a caring grandfather. So just like any Asian parent!
Back in the present, it’s painfully obvious that none of Luffy’s crew have been on a ship the size of the Going Merry before. Well, all the guys at least, because Nami is competent as usual. Of course, Nami alone isn’t enough to steer the whole ship. Fortunately, it looks like Garp doesn’t have it in him to actually hurt Luffy either? It’s like they’re playing a game with each other. Either way, Luffy discovers a new ability when Garp throws one of the ship’s cannonballs at him and he inflates and shoots the cannonball right at Garp’s ship, destroying one of the…uhm…sail things.
The Going Merry manages to escape into a fog where the Marines can’t see them. Unfortunately, the crew of the Going Merry can’t see anything either. Fortunately, Luffy can smell food and they’re able to get out of the fog and find themselves at the Baratie, which is one of the ships they’ve introduced in the behind the scenes featurette!
However, just like any hit fine dining establishment, you don’t just waltz into the Baratie. There’s a three week waiting list — damn — but Nami is once again supremely competent and slips the maitre d some money so they can get a table.
Here’s where we get introduced to Sanji — I know him because him, Buggy, and Zoro were the three guys everyone was thirsting over — and maybe it’s because I haven’t eaten yet while writing this but the food preparations are making me hungry. And since I am a pewr I kinda winced at the food just being discarded because it’s not on the menu. No to food waste just give it to me then!
Anyways, the head chef gets Sanji to wait tables instead and not only does he kick ass, he’s a fucking flirt? And maybe I’m just an easy whore but it works for me? I can understand the thirst because I am feeling it right now! Also, the boys teasing her because it’s obvious Sanji is down bad is hilarious and it’s an easy way to show that they’re getting along!
While the guys are at the Baratie, Garp is scheming and is sending Mihawk to take care of them. I also know Mihawk because Steven John Ward is hilarious and I follow him on social media! Garp tells Mihawk to bring him Luffy alive, but unbeknownst to him, Koby is listening in to this conversation. Is Koby going to be like a Puritan or something? Lawful good?
Back at the Baratie, Nami is the lone voice of reason and asks why Luffy didn’t tell them that Garp was his grandpa. But it’s going to be something that they’ll have to talk about later on because Luffy doesn’t have money to pay for their bill and the chef is not amused. Luffy’s going to have to wash dishes!
While Luffy is off paying for their meal, the rest of the crew is at the bar and we finally get to see traitor Nami emerge. She does not want to be caught by the Marines and is looking to leave behind the crew and head to the Conomi Islands.
Over at Garp’s ship, it does look like Koby is going to be a lawful good character because he is outraged at the notion of the government working with a pirate like Mihawk to get stuff done. So it’s not going to be an enemies to lovers story then? Is Koby going to become the ultimate antagonist?
Back at the Baratie, Sanji and Luffy have a little heart to hear and Luffy tries to convince Sanji to join his crew, especially after Sanji insists on feeding a down on his luck pirate that just walked in. Turns out that the pirate was part of an armada that went into the Grand Line and is the only one to survive. Why do I get the feeling that just made Luffy want to go even more?
Meanwhile, Koby confronts Garp about his choices and to Garp’s credit, he doesn’t lie. He tells Koby that the world isn’t fair and that he’ll have to learn to live with that fact. Come on Naomi Smalls!
Meanwhile, Mihawk is already at the Baratie and thanks to a drunk Usopp, meets the rest of the crew. And since Mihawk is the acknowledged best swordsman in the world, Zoro wants to beat him off. Of course Mihawk accepts.
There’s this funny scene where Luffy tries to dissuade Zoro from fighting Mihawk and Zoro asks him what he told him back when he was tied up on a cross in the marine yard, but essentially Luffy isn’t going to stand in the way of anyone’s dream. And Nami — because she is the lone one with any brains and isn’t an emotional man — is frustrated because these are her friends and they’re being idiots.
Zoro and Mihawk meet at dawn, but before the duel proceeds Mihawk comments that he likes Luffy’s hat. Wait did Mihawk and Shanks have a thing? Anyways, the duel ensues and Zoro wasn’t even anywhere near Mihawk’s level. But Mihawk lets him live and tells him to look for him again when he gets stronger.
