Ron Watches Drag Race Thailand Season 3 Episode 8

Once again, I’m playing a game of catch up and I really don’t like it. I feel like I haven’t been able to fully ~imbibe~ Drag Race Thailand and that it’s really affected my enjoyment of the show. But I can’t help that circumstance just seem to be working against it!

Gigi Ferocious bid goodbye to the girls in the previous episode and now we’re left with Frankie, Gawdland, Nane, Zepee, and Spicy. There’s some mourning for Spicy, but what’s really moving the quuens is how close to the crown they are. Top five!

The next day the Queens tally up their badges and cash prizes and while Gawdland, Nane, and Spicy all have one badge, Spicy has the least amount of money because Gawdland and Nane have also won mini challenges. Either way at least they’re getting paid!

PanMail finally arrives but it’s not Pangina that comes down the steps. Instead, it’s Drag Race France host Nicky Doll, who back in July crowned Le Filip as Keiona’s successor. The queens are freaking out and Gawdland even prefers her over Pangina.

Pangina and Nicky have some nice back and forth but I am so curious as to what was the Thai phrase that Nicky said that made the queens laugh. Google just sends me to porn, unfortunately. Whatever it is will have to wait as the queens take on the puppet mini challenge.

Here’s another instance where I feel like I would appreciate it better if I understood Thai. There’s parts where they make fun of Nane’s Northern Thai accent and since I have no idea what that sounds like I’m left out of the joke. Anyways, Spicy wins the mini challenge and adds more money to her winnings.

From there we head on to this week’s Maxi Challenge, the makeover. Activists and organizers from Bangkok Pride are the makeover subjects and since Spicy won the mini challenge, she gets to assign the makeover subjects to the queens. From the confessionals, it seems like the queens like Spicy’s picks, but let’s see if they still think the same during the competition.

As the queens prepare for the runway there’s a sincere moment between Zepee and her partner that delves a little into how Zepee’s makeover partner was radicalized into pushing for marriage equality. It’s a touching story but just like Drag Race Mexico, I wish it wasn’t just plopped unceremoniously into the narrative. There’s also a discussion about rainbow washing and how Bangkok Pride is pushing against but it’s also just plopped in there. We need a better editing team!

During Pangina’s walkthrough, Frankie gets a very good jolt to her system because Pangina correctly points out that her current makeover plans don’t exactly fill the brief. Frankie’s sticking to her guns though and I’m just like…okay. Spicy also gets called out for what even I can recognize is a pretty flimsy concept, while Gawdland gets…neutral comment, I guess?

When it comes to Nane Sphera’s walkthrough, she didn’t get a lot of comments on how to improve but she did get a lot of laughs. And it was an actual conversation that I also found funny! No culture divide here!

The next day as the queens are dressing up their partners, there’s a conversation about how much their family knows about them being queer and this conversation was at least edited better. The segue into the conversation was smooth and it just organically built from there. And it’s so great to hear that this was shot as the same-sex marriage bill passed in Thailand!

The queens finally head to the runway and Gawdland is up first. I like it! Zepee’s…was okay. I dunno, it just didn’t work for me? It’s not that it’s bad because I’m the last person to talk but i just couldn’t connect with it. Maybe it was the things attached to the outfit?

I didn’t like the color combinations with Spicy’s outfits either. It looked so jarring to me! Frankie’s doesn’t look bad but I can already see the judges pointing out that it’s hard to see the family resemblance. They didn’t even have the same feathers! Nane Sphera and her partner at least had the same color scheme but I didn’t like the overall look? I just kept flashing back to Manila Luzon’s bee look and how so much better that was.

Gawdland gets props for her work, while Zepee and Spicy are probably in the bottom. Surprisingly, the judges are cool with how Frankie has chosen to dress her makeover partner. I really thought they wouldn’t like it. But they do rip into Nane’s work like I thought they would!

Gawdland wins this week and gets a cash prize and gift certificates but I kinda wanted the makeover subject to get something as well? Kinda gotten used to that being the case with other makeover episodes. Meanwhile, Spicy Sunshine and Nane Sphera are in the bottom.

I’ll be honest, I think both Spicy and Nane didn’t know the words and tried to make up for it with splits and tricks. Nane is the one that gets sent home but I think neither of them really did a good job, sue me.
