We’re already halfway through Season 1! Let’s get into it!
We left the previous episode with Nick soaking wet in front of Charlie’s house, which really is the least he could do after leaving Charlie alone after kissing him. They decide to go up to Charlie’s room to talk about everything that happened last night.
Being the anxious ball of nerves that he is, Charlie immediately starts apologizing but of course nothing shuts up an anxious homosexual like a kiss from the hot jock. You’re a natural at this, Nick. But then he sits down on Charlie’s bed with wet clothes and I’m like…at least have the decency to undress and not get the bed wet?
Nick explains how he’s having a full-on gay crisis to Charlie and honestly, so what if his reaction is idealized? So what if Nick doesn’t go through the self-loathing and the lashing out? This could be a great tool to show young people how they should grapple with things like this. Besides, there’s loads of other media that serves that if that’s what you’re looking for.
Back at school, Nick is immediately accosted by Imogen, who immediately asks him if there’s something that’s changed about him. While I think Imogen is just using it as an excuse to touch Nick, I can fully understand the slight panic he feels. It’s hard being in the closet, y’all!
Nick being blind to Imogen’s move will definitely come back to bite him later, but for now he’s happily sitting beside Charlie in class, smiling goofily at each other like the queer people that they are. I’m so single, you guys.
I love how Mr. Ajayi, Charlie’s sassy gay mentor, is “Mmmm”-ing his way through Charlie’s admission of Nick being on the rugby team and him joining the rugby team. It’s the knowledge gained from years of open homosexuality. I also appreciated Mr. Ajayi giving Nick the evil eye when he thought he was Ben.
There’s some rugby team conflict involving Charlie that definitely wasn’t in the book and I like that Charlie works on this on his own. Gives him more of a spine than he had in the book. I also like the girl’s school reaction to Tara kissing a girl at Harry’s party as well as Imogen’s hilarious “I’m an ally” declaration.
Back over at the boy’s school, Harry is being a dick towards Tao and unfortunately for Nick, he’s the one that gets caught in the crossfire. You really can’t blame Tao for this because Nick really doesn’t do anything to stop his rugby friends from being absolute dicks.
And now those absolute dicks are about to get pummeled because the rugby team they’re going up against is a specialist sports school, meaning the players look massive. The Truham rugby team gets absolutely decimated and Charlie is ran through by one of those massive players, sending him to the clinic or whatever it is the British call it.
While Nick and Charlie have an apology-off in the clinic that just leaves both of them unsatisfied. Elle and Tao witness Nick agreeing to go on a date with known ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, Imogen.
