Ron Watches RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episode 3

Yes, finally getting to watch the new episode on time since I’ve done all my obligations and I can just lounge.

No one went home in the previous episode, thanks to Hormona’s immense luck at picking a lever. And now that the queen everybody was already irritated about has managed to stay, not a lot of them are happy about it. Which leads to a spirited discussion and trading of barbs between Joella and Hormona that had me S C R E A M I N G. Asking Joella if she was holding her wig up during Rate A Queen? BITCH.

The next day, we have a Monopoly mini-challenge where the queens win money and are also conveniently grouped into colors. But as Ru points out, this isn’t a team challenge so they each have to outdo the people in their same color group. Ru didn’t say that specifically but you know the judges are going to say this queen used this color better than you.

The queens get their materials and Lucky Starzzz is not having it. It’s something I’ve always wondered about with people who can work with unconventional materials. Do they get so used to working with those unconventional materials that conventional materials confuse them? That seems to be the case with Lucky Starzzz! Suzie is another girl that’s worried because, in her own words, she is not a seamstress.

Sam Star and Crystal Envy, on the other hand, are feeling pretty confident. Considering Sam Star is Trinty the Tuck’s daughter, she’s got a high bar to meet because the outfits Trinity made during her time on the show? Exquisite. Jewels Sparkles is also feeling pretty confident.

Lexi Love, meanwhile, is feeling ambitious and is trying to recreate a moment from a fashion show that she saw before. Kori King is hoping that Lexi’s ambition comes to bite her in the ass because she isn’t planning on winning this challenge but is just hoping that someone flops so she can be safe.

Arrietty sounds like she’s going to tone down her alien looks this time around and I’m actually excited to see what’s that going to look like. Joella, meanwhile, is turning to Acacia for some help on her outfit and Acacia, honey, production already has it in for you don’t feed them this storyline! They’re going to have you be the “help yourself first before helping others” queen and eliminate you this episode!

The production has really gotten better at hiding the possible placements of the queens during walkthroughs because during the talk with the yellow you couldn’t tell who seemed like they’d be in trouble. However, it’s being very clearly telegraphed with the green team that Joella is going to be lip syncing this episode. A bodysuit. A green bodysuit. With Michelle Visage on the panel. You just prepared the noose you’re going to hang yourself with, Joella. And Hormona may just be laughing at you because she’s been making theater costumes for the longest time, apparently!

But the real bomb that Ru delivers to the Werk Room is the Rate A Queen receipts that show who the queens voted for. Thanks to the ~dossier~, the Lana Arrietty alliance is exposed and Onya gets a little abrasive with Jewels. This abrasiveness soon blows up into an actual fight between the two of them as we’ve seen in the teasers and we’re going to see that later in the show I guess. But what really hurt my heart was Lucky crying over her garment. I felt so sad for her!

The next day, it’s not the Onya-Jewels fight that immediately gets showcased but the Lexi Love-Hormona one, as it turns out Hormona used materials that weren’t allowed and since Lexi called it out she has to redo parts of her outfit. You in danger girl!

While Hormona is pulling out her rhinestones, we finally get the confrontation between Onya and Jewels and it feels very reminiscent of “Look how orange you fucking look?” if that makes any sense? Which just means I enjoyed it.

The runway show starts and Lucky Starzzz does okay considering she was crying the day before? It’s not a great dress but she managed to pull through! It does look pretty diminished when Hormona Lisa walks out, whose look still manages to feel opulent even with the rhinestones removed. Lexi’s…I think it’s Lexi herself that sells the garment but I don’t think it would work on another queen.

Suzie Toot is up first for the red group and I also think she does okay! Meanwhile, Arrietty’s look came off as more Asian than Latina to me but then again I am not Latina so I could most definitely be wrong about my impression. Lana’s is also just okay which wouldn’t be so bad but you kinda start thinking that maybe Luxx Noir London would have done this better.

We then get the yellow group and Acacia also looks good! You can also say the same for Kori and Lydia’s outfits. I think the yellow group had the best outfits so far and yes I know that this is not a team challenge.

We get the green group and Joella’s outfit isn’t looking so bad, to be honest. Will it save her though? I don’t know! Onya and Jewels looks are better than Joella’s though, especially Jewels. I can’t believe he did that all by herself!

Finally, the blue group gets on the stage and Sam fully shows why she’s Trinity the Tuck’s daughter. I thought the outfit looked wonderful! Crystal’s was also great but I think if this was a face-off between her and Sam Sam would win.

Hormona Lisa, Lexi Love, Suzie Toot, Lana, Acacia, Lydia, Jewels, and Crystal are all declared safe, leaving Lucky, Arrietty, Kori, Joella, Onya, and Sam on the Main Stage. My heart is immediately broken by Lucky, who just breaks down because her work just didn’t pass muster. I hope she makes it though! Arrietty deservedly gets some praise while Kori gets called out for an outfit that doesn’t scream opulence.

Joella also gets called out for her outfit which I also feel is deserved. It looked better than I expected it would look but that doesn’t mean it fit the brief! Meanwhile, the two obvious top girls joining Arrietty this episode are Onya and Sam and I can’t wait to see how Jewels is going to respond to Onya getting high marks after “stealing” material from her.

From the judges’ discussion, it looks like it’s either going to be Arrietty or Sam winning this episode. I did like how they emphasized that despite not being as technically good as Arrietty or Sam’s work, Onya sold the garment which is what got her to the top.

Kori, Lucky, and Joella are in the bottom, with Kori quickly being declared safe. I do want Lucky to stay over Joella but Lucky looks so depressed that I feel like she won’t properly lip sync and send herself home. And the moment Lucky’s shoes flew off I knew she was going home. Poor baby.
