Episode 1 was interesting enough for me to want to watch more! I am liking the My School Mate, The Barbarian vibes it’s giving!
At the end of the first episode, we see Se Hyun finally agree to be part of Ga Min’s study group after Ga Min stands up for him. At the start of this new one, their substitute homeroom teacher Han Kyeong is running up the stairs to see what exactly is the commotion that caused a wrench to fly out of the classroom window. The commotion being the fight Ga Min just had.
Because Ga Min is the one left standing, he’s the one called to the vice principal’s office to maybe be reprimanded for everything that went down. Se Hyun joins him there and calls him the head of the study group and Ga Min is happy as a puppy at the sound of that.
He isn’t happy for long though, as the vice principal orders him to be expelled for engaging in school violence, which is a pretty serious issue in South Korea, as so many shows and news reports have shown the whole world. Han Kyeong stands up for him, though, and even lends credibility to Ga Min’s study group idea. Ga Min gets to stay in school!
The next day, Se Hyun makes it look like he just ran into Ga Min despite waiting for Ga Min to arrive because that’s just how guys fall in love. They find out from Han Kyeong that if the study group is to continue, it first needs to have five members, which is going to be tough because the way to move up in the school is to win fights. But Ga Min is an optimistic golden retriever who says they can do this to Se Hyun’s black cat and if this was written by a different person someone would be getting finger banged right now.
They don’t get any applicants for the study group, but they do get a fight challenge that is hilariously resolved in a funny fight scene that takes its cues from Jackie Chan. The boys providing commentary from outside the library and then inflating the story was a nice touch as well. Everyone avoiding his eyes because they think he’s going to beat them up? Filing out of the cafeteria because they don’t want to meet his gaze? Hilarious.
I think Ga Min is the best character Min-hyun has played so far? He’s so endearing and funny that it’s not hard to root for him. Or maybe I just like golden retriever guys? Either way I am utterly charmed and want to snuggle with him.
Han Kyeong, on the other hand, may not have the chance to snuggle with anybody because the student that Ga Min defeated in the first episode is in her home and has been ordered to make her quit. It’s Gun Yeob — a student who studied in the United States — who comes to her aid. How many students are into Han Kyeong?
While Gun Yeob puts up a decent fight, he eventually succumbs to the superior numbers of the students who want to get rid of Han Kyeong. Apparently he got stabbed when he was in middle school? My goodness. The rest of the guys beat him up and its Ga Min who comes to the rescue, this time in a fight scene that takes its cues from Bruce Lee. And the show knows it too!
One of the students who tried to beat up Han Kyeong goes back and asks for forgiveness, but she asks something for it in return. I assumed it was to join the study group, but it’s something entirely different. The study group does get a call from some named Ji Woo, which is when we find out that their school is actually a co-ed school. What?
