Ron Watches Study Group Episode 3

This show hasn’t lost me yet, and in fact has got me hooked with its homages to martial arts films and martial artists. Let’s see if it continues to hold my attention!

At the end of the second episode, Ga Min just revealed to the audience that Yusung Technical is actually a co-ed school, and that a potential member for their study group can be found in the girls side of the school. But the resolution to that will have to wait for late ron in the episode as this third episode starts with Han Kyeong asking about Pi Han Wul, the son of the rumored gang leader that implemented the fighting hierarchy in the school. She’s warned that she might actually die if she continues to ask around, but that doesn’t stop her from asking to meet with him.

Then we go back to Ga Min and Se Hyun. The name of the girl who wants to join the study group is Ji Woo and she just happens to be the twin of Hyeon U, the guy whose ass Ga Min kicked all the way back in episode one.

However, Ji Woo isn’t a bully like her brother and is actually the one bullied over at the girl’s side of the school. Or at least she let’s herself be bullied because she definitely can fight as well. She’s possibly doing it so that her friend, Hee-won, doesn’t become the target of the bullies.

Unfortunately, Ji Woo isn’t just bullied by the girls, but is also abused by her supposed boyfriend. This is not something I enjoy watching, to be honest. It’s a good thing Ga Min stands up for her and the plot delays the fight between her boyfriend and Ga Min, hopefully only until the end of this episode because I don’t want them to draw this out.

Turns out it wasn’t Ji Woo who handed in the application, but her friend Hee-won. She also reveals that Ji Woo is being blackmailed with a video of her brother stealing from an ATM, something he had to do because he got robbed of an important delivery which the show doesn’t expound on just yet. She handed in the application as a way to repay Ji Woo back for standing up for her when she first got bullied in school. She wants the guys to get rid of the video Ji Woo is being blackmailed with and for them to become Ji Woo’s study buddies instead of her, since she has to transfer schools because of her father’s job.

However, the video is in the student council room, and apparently the student council are allowed to bully the “troublemakers” in the school. Unfortunately, it’s the student council who determines who the troublemakers are so it isn’t exactly a fair system. And also the student council president is a dick who uploaded Hyeon U’s video anyway despite telling Ji Woo that he wouldn’t do it. The plan is to get her to depend on him and this is just disgusting.

Meanwhile, Han Wul is denying any connection with Hyeon U to Han Kyeong, telling her that he had a debt to the school council president that he couldn’t repay. We also find out that that package that was stolen from Hyeon U was something Han Wul asked him to deliver, and if you connect the dots you know that Han Wul set up Hyeon U so he could have another person under his thumb. Han Kyeong isn’t letting herself be intimidated by Han Wul, though, and now I am curious as to how they’re going to explain him further into the show.

Ga Min, on the other hand, is already in the student council office and trying to to get back the USB that has the video of Hyeon U. I thought he finally met someone that could stand up to him but as it turns out, Ga Min let himself be thrown around a little by the student council president so he could get to the USB holding the video. Smart! Once that’s done, he handily kicks the student council president’s ass. However, he’s unable to quickly walk away from the scene because other members of the student council walk in on him and we get another good fight scene that is unfortunately, unable to stop the student council president from uploading the video of Hyeon U.

BUT! All is not lost because Ga Min literally takes the CPU with him and runs out of the student council office. He hands it off to Se Hyun — I use the term loosely because it slid on the floor after Ga Min tripped — who in turn throws it off the school’s roof. With the CPU gone and the video along with it, Ji Woo finally gets to kick student council president’s ass. Girl power!

Elsewhere in the school, Ga Min is being dragged around by a teacher because he beat up the student council and in the process he drops the USB with Hyeon U’s video. Hee-won gets her moment to shine when she stands up to the girl bully who gets to the USB before her, but that moment is immediately cut short because Hyeon U appears to stab the student council president — and ends up stabbing Han Kyeong instead. Turns out Hyeon U does what he does so that Ji Woo gets to continue being an athlete and I gotta say sometimes K-dramas just push it too much. Or maybe am just not into stuff like this at the moment. The world’s already burning and I don’t need any further stress? I do feel like if I was watching this in better ecological, political, social climes I wouldn’t be so stressed out by it.

Once again, rumors starts swirling around Ga Min, especially since the student council president won’t admit that a girl just kicked his ass. Now the top freshman in the school wants to beat Ga Min up to maintain his rank but Ga Min really isn’t about that fighting life, despite being so good at it. But when the guy threatens to beat up anyone who dares to apply to the study group, Ga Min jumps from the fourth floor of the school and punches the guy in the face.
