Ron Watches RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episode 9

Yes, I know. It’s another late entry. But I’ve had a busy weekend and a busy work week so I’ve had to literally catch up on sleep because I am an eldritch being with one foot in the grave. I’m just trying to catch up!

Acacia bid the show adieu in the last episode and while the group is sad about that, Lydia is happy that Kori gets to stay another week. Sam, on the other hand, is feeling her oats, especially now that the judges have told her to loosen up which she took as a go signal to be loud about her achievements and not be a pageant princess about it.

And Sam does have the wins to back it up as she joins Suzie and Onya in the two wins circle. Everybody else is now longing for even just one win and you can tell that the three they highlighted — Lydia, Kori, and Lana — are going to be the bottom placements because that’s how they do it on Drag Race.

The next day, Jewels is claiming this week as the week she’s going to shine and it may just happen for her! Or it could be another safe placement because she hasn’t had a storyline on the show so far other than that little tiff with Onya. But we’ll get back to that later as Ru enters the Werk Room and tells the queens that the library is about to be opened.

I really liked Onya, Jewels, and Suzie’s reads but there can only be one mini challenge winner and that goes to Suzie Toot. Congrats! There’s a cash tip! And Suzie also gets to pick first when it comes to themes for the Maxi Challenge, which is an homage to Betsey Johnson and her designs.

The final three teams end up being Suzie, Lydia, and Jewels for the Punk Grunge Flappers; Lexi, Sam, and Arrietty for Pre-Nup; and Lana, Onya, and Kori for Betsey’s Prom. And from the early comments as they rummage through the fabrics it really looks that Kori will be in the bottom for sure. Lexi is also voicing out her sturggles but considering the whole drama with Onya the last time they had a design challenge I don’t think they’ll recycle that storyline again. Onya may also be in trouble today because I am not fashion expert but that tube dress does not look good on her.

The queens also get a visit from Betsey Johnson and hopefully the fact that she pioneered trans models on the runway inspires Lexi to do better because she really has been stressing out over her garment. Suzie, on the other hand, doesn’t sound like she has any problem with what she’s working on but I think at this point in the competition Suzie has already shown that she can be very confident when it comes to her work. But perhaps the most unfortunate victim of the walkthrough is Koti, who is going to change the dress she’s making because of the feedback from Ru. That’s just the kiss of death if you ask me.

As the show goes on Onya’s dress really does not impress at all so she may finally get a taste of that bottom placement this episode alongside Kori King. If that ends up happening, Kori is definitely going home because they’re not about to send the one they’re editing to be one of the final four home. And the fact that Kori changed her design again? And then her relationship with Lydia gets a spotlight before they get on the runway? The writing is on the wall, henny.

The runway starts and despite her worries about her garment I actually like Jewels’ look! I don’t know about the fur-o-rama but I still liked it! The rest of the flapper dress are actually okay as well so I think they’re going to be safe. I don’t know if they’re good enough for a top placement but I don’t think they’ll be getting a bottom placement at least.

The Prom dresses, on the other hand? Ooofff. If someone like me that has minimal fashion knowledge doesn’t like the look, it’s gotta be bad. I just don’t think it fit any of the queens very well. Also, all of the outfit just didn’t look well-constructed.

The Prenup girls are definitely getting the top placements this episode because all of the outfits just look fabulous, whether it’s from Arrietty, Sam, or Lexi. I think Arrietty might just get her second win with this one because I don’t think production likes Sam enough to give her back to back wins.

Suzie, Lana, and Sam are all safe which just strengthens my feeling that it’s going to be a second Arrietty win this episode. The judges have a lot of good things to say about Jewels too so maybe she might get the win and Arrietty gets the face crack!

The comments they give Lydia absolutely show how little I know about fashion because I never noticed any of those things about the outfit! I thought it was an okay look! Onya also gets read which I expected but she had a very charming response to the critiques which I think will be what saves her this episode.

Jewels wins this episode and I think the fact that Betsey fully said that Jewels look embodied the whole collection that she made sealed that win for her. Arrietty and Lexi’s looks were amazing as well but I understand the choice to give the win to Jewels. Also seeing Lexi’s face crack moment? It’s the Jan face of the season.

Onya is indeed safe this episode and it’s a battle between Lydia and Kori, which I should have expected because it’s a moment that production loves — pitting friends and/or lovers against each other. I do agree with Lydia that it should have been Onya in the bottom but her charming responses really saved her.

And maybe the production saw the vision because I think this was one of the better lip syncs this season! And to top it off with that kiss? This was almost as fun as that Lexi Love lip sync for the win! Unfortunately, it is not a double shantay and Kori is sent home.
