Ron Watches Daredevil Born Again Episode 5

I think what I liked the most about the previous episode was how Matt and Fisk showing their breaking points — Matt during his confrontation with Frank and Fisk with the fallout of Daniel’s leak to BB Urich. I wonder what’s in store in this new episode?

From the very green opening scenes, the episode is making it clear that it’s St. Patrick’s Day in New York City. Matt isn’t celebrating though as he is in a bank trying to scrounge up funds for his law practice. He’s being charming to the assistant bank manager but I think he does lose some points there because he doesn’t know who Ms. Marvel is. But the cross-promotion! Either way, the bank denies his loan.

And wouldn’t you know it this same bank is the one being hit by the gang that Vanessa ordered to pay $1.8 million in restitution because of the kill they did in episode three. Matt had actually left the bank already but because he’s who he is, he returns back and gets “trapped” because the robbers think he’s just a blind guy who wandered in.

Matt telling his associate to call the cops before “wandering” back into the bank puts a little wrench in the robbers’ plans because they hadn’t expected the police to arrive so early, but it doesn’t completely derail them. They’re still going to make the assistant bank manager open the vault but what they don’t know is that the assistant bank manager doesn’t know how to open it.

Meanwhile, the hostage negotiator arrives and it really does seem like the gang already has an in in the police force because they look like they are playing them very easily. They agree to give them two hostages but one of the hostages they pick is Matt and Matt doesn’t want to be out of the bank so he argues his way out of freedom.

While the assistant bank manager tries to stall because he has no idea how to open the bank vault, Matt draws one of the goons away by saying he needs to go to the bathroom and fully playing up his blindness. We then get a great staircase fight that culminates with Matt choking the goon with his thighs and he can do that to me too WHO SAID THAT MALICIOUS GAY FAGGOTRY.

OH WAIT SO THE BANK MANAGER IS ACTUALLY A CHARACTER FROM MISS MARVEL. MAN I GOTTA WATCH THAT SHOW.

Anyways, I don’t know if this is what they planned but the gang leader and the hostage negotiator seem to have a connection or at they very least some tension between them that is outside of the whole criminal/policewoman dynamic. Or maybe I am misreading!

Matt and the bank manager finally open the vault and find the safety deposit box that the gang is after and it contains a “pretty impressive diamond” which I put in quotes because it is a Marvel Cinematic Universe show and it may not just be a diamond but something more. Through some smart sleight of hand, Matt manages to prevent the robbers from stealing the diamond and also catches up with the leader of the robbers and delivers on the leg breaking that was in the trailer. I winced.

AND I ALSO REALLY SHOULD WATCH MISS MARVEL NOW BECAUSE THE ASSISTANT BANK MANAGER WAS KAMALA’S DAD. I SHOULD HAVE RECOGNIZED HIM BUT IT’S BEEN YEARS SINCE I WATCHED THE MARVELS.

Now did this episode move the plot forward? Not particularly. It’s more of a connective tissue to maybe a possible crossover episode in the future. But I feel like it’s a necessary break because the next half of the show is going to go all in when it comes to the conflict between Matt and Fisk.
