Ron Watches RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 Episode 13

This is probably the penultimate episode unless we get a sudden twist so let’s just dive right in!

The previous episode had Lana going home and back in the Werk Room Sam is deeply affected by it, especially since it’s her first time to lip sync. And she is still very much in her feelings about Lexi choosing to work with Onya instead, which I can understand but at least she got to stay another episode!

Onya gets congratulated for her performance and for being the sole member of the four wins club, but ~Suzie goes and spoil it all by saying something shady to Jewels~. Jewels isn’t letting it discourage her and even calls herself the roach of drag, which she immediately regrets.

The next day, Sam is still affected by her bottom placement, as evidenced by her visible beard which I actually thought was make-up? But it is indeed facial hair. But she’ll have to worry about her facial hair some other time as Ru has entered the Werk Room to tell them that this week’s mini challenge is Spill the T, which involves the queens voting for which one of them fits a certain descriptor.

The mini challenge is a mostly meh affair until we get to the final question, which is who’s the queen going home next. Jewels is the top pick and this could either be a foreshadowing of coming events or the start of Jewels’ redemption. Sam might just go home!

This week’s Maxi Challenge is the makeover and you have got to be an extra cynical person to not be moved at least a little bit by the queens getting emotional seeing their parents walk into the Werk Room. I see them handicapping Onya and Jewels with the dads being brought in instead of the moms but maybe I’m the one being cynical now.

Immediately, Sam and her mom are my favorite because they’re just so comfortable with each other. Suzie and her mom, though? Ooofff. There might be trouble there because she can’t wear heels and she’s already talking about how she might not have energy for the runway.

Also Onya’s dad? Such a sweet and supportive man and a sense of humor about the cards life has dealt him. Rob-hurt-a Bank? The drag name for a former bank robber. Screaming. The story of Jewels’ family — the death of her older brother and how that’s changed the family — is touching but also just makes me feel that she really is going home on this episode because we’re learning this now.

We also get a little more information about the relationship between Lexi and her mom. While her mom did throw her out of the house, the two of them have been trying to mend their relationship and at least for now, they seem to be working well together. But we shall see!

I also laughed at the dads trying out the breastplates. They’re at least enjoying the process because Mama Toot? Is not. We might just see Suzie lipsync fir her life! If there’s anything Suzie should be a little glad about is the fact that Lexi finally realizes that Suzie is just the her in a different font.

We also get a lot of sweet moments during the runthrough with Ru, especially Lexi’s mom using the correct pronouns with her. And I’m kinda relieved that there isn’t an addition performance aspect because I honestly have never liked it in any of the Drag Race franchises.

As the queens are preparing for the runway I feel a little pain in my heart at the way Suzie is a little jealous of how the other queens’ moms are with them. She and her mom just don’t have that affectionate a dynamic which I’m kinda familiar with as an Asian. We’re not very overtly affectionate!

The runway starts and I like how Lexi has done up her mother! It’s age-appropriate sexy, if that’s the right term. Sam and her mom? Gorgeous. Gorgina. Suzie and her mom…well, they did their best. I also found Jewels and her dad’s outfit to be a little too simple? I can see the judges saying that it’s not drag enough. And again, I wanna emphasize that I am an Onya supporter but her and her dad’s outfit was a little too cosplay for me? Again, not drag enough.

The judges critiques start and I guess I really am not a fashion person because Law Roach liked Suzie and her mom’s outfit and Law Roach is definitely more knowledgeable when it comes to fashion. And boy does he tear into Onya and her dad’s outfits and I kinda understand. I wouldn’t go so far as hating the outfits but they definitely weren’t the best of the bunch.

Sam wins this week and Jewels and Onya are the bottom two this week and didn’t I say that the fact that they got the male parents was foreshadowing? Didn’t I? It’s hard to look at Onya’s dad tearing up because it feels like he took it really hard. It’s Onya’s first time in the bottom so I really think no matter how well Jewels does in the lip sync, she’s going to go home.

And Jewels does really well in the lip sync. That wig and outfit reveal? Fabulous. And I want everyone to look at all the previous posts because I have been an Onya fan but I really do think Jewels outdid her here. BUT they both get to stay which I am happy with just for the euphoria that Onya and Jewels both feel at staying and for how relieved both their parents looked.
