Full disclosure: I wouldn’t call myself a diehard fan of Devil May Cry. I’ve played bits of the games, but the game where I got the farthest was the one diehard fans didn’t like: DmC: Devil May Cry. But this show was done by the same people who did Castlevania so let’s see if this wins me over in the same way!
The show starts at the Vatican, where a gang is stealing religious artifacts, which quite frankly reminds me of two things: Dan Brown and those TV Patrol features where churches in the province get their statues stolen. But unbeknownst to these American goons — the demonic bunny that appears out of nowhere makes sure to emphasize this — all of it has been a cover for demon bunny to steal the Force Edge, the sword of the demon knight Sparda. And I know him from me playing the least loved of the DmC video games!
Elsewhere in the world — America, probably — a mother gets drawn to a dark alley and is attacked by demons who also look recognizable to me thanks to the least loved of the DmC video games! And because I am a broken individual, the Dante here has that cockiness everyone thought was cool in the early 2000s? That same juvenile sense of cool that Vin Diesel’s XxX movies tried to push? I unfortunately sometimes find that attractive.
There’s a montage of media entities disseminating the news of the Vatican bombing that follows, which I don’t know if Americans will find funny considering how fucked up their country is right now. Even I found it a little too much. But maybe Americans still aren’t aware of how deeply fucked they are.
I do like how they’re explaining demons in this show, though. Demons, at least in this DmC universe, are just humans who evolved in a different way and exist in a universe parallel to ours. Now is it a new idea? Of course not, I’ve read it before in The Elfstones of Shannara, but if it ain’t broke, why fix it? The demon bunny leaves a clue that the only way they can find him is if they find the demon hunter, which is how we find out that Dante isn’t the only demon hunter that exists in this universe. But of course, he’s the demon hunter the demon bunny was talking about.
So where is Dante? Fighting a shapeshifting demon who disguised itself first as a baby and then as his brother, Vergil. Who I know from playing the least loved of the DmC video games will have a heel turn in the series. We also find out that the pendant on his necklace is one half of demon tech that can open the gates of hell and bring the demons into our world, which is why the bunny wants the American government to find him and maybe get the pendant from him. Now why this bunny thinks the humans are just going to surrender that to him, I have no idea.
