Ron Watches Devil May Cry Episode 2

Finished the first episode of this show and I thought it was okay! Was it as good as the first episode of Castlevania? Not really, but it was good enough for me to keep watching. I do have to note that I am not deep into the Devil May Cry lore so my appreciation may just stem from not being particularly attached to the source material.

We start the episode with yet another scene of men loading guns. It’s a group of mercenaries that the government is hiring to presumably hunt down Dante. Obviously the mercenaries underestimate the pretty boy because they don’t know they’re in an animated show. Let’s see how they get their ass kicked!

In fact, the ass kicking starts before they even get to Dante, as the obvious female lead sniffs out a demon within the group of mercenaries. She makes quick work out of the demon but when she talks about the eyes not having a glimmer of the soul and then the show keeps panning to the vice president with his sunglassess? I’m stupid but even I can see what’s being telegraphed here. Let’s see how they reveal the vice president further down the line.

And of course, Dante is already aware of the mercenaries coming for him and has already decided that they’re not going to take that necklace off his neck because it’s the only thing that his mother has entrusted to him. The ambush begins and I question why the mercenaries didn’t bother to check out the whole room but it’s a show about demon hunters so I’ll give it a pass.

Dante makes quick work of the mercenaries but does get shot in the chest by one of them. HOWEVER, he heals that hole in his chest which tells me that he knows that his fully human because you don’t just do that and quip that you heal extremely fast. You know you’re something else.

And Mary — the female lead — thinks Dante may be Sparda and Mary has a chip on her shoulder, to say the least, when it comes to demons. I don’t know her backstory yet so I don’t know if it’s justified but she sure is mad about something. Unlike the other mercenaries, Mary’s got the skills and is actually the one who manages to swipe the necklace from Dante.

Mary effectively swiping the necklace from Dante results in a rooftop chase where the show makes use of the tried and tested formula of violence as sexual tension and you know what? Mary ripping that shirt off and Dante being all cocky about it? Worked for me. I understand I am a broken person perpetuating MALICIOUS GAY FAGGOTRY.

Mary not only successfully steals the necklace from Dante, she also lures him into a trap and captures him. I did not think it would lead to this but I haven’t played the games so maybe the players anticipated it!
