Ron Watches Devil May Cry Episode 8

I was supposed to post this on a Saturday but because I had to do some personal stuff, I’ve had to push it back so now you’re going to get this now. Let’s go!

We were left with a cliffhanger at the end of the previous episode — the bunny has been vanquished but he’s warned Dante that killing him will only lead to something worse. And the show is pretty heavy-handed with making it look like that something worse is the vice president.

As it turns out, the bunny still hasn’t been vanquished! He finds one of the still surviving demons named Bloodstryke and eats him. The act finally makes the bunny go full demon, which I think will end up attacking the DARKCOM agents that the vice president has brought with him.

Those DARKCOM agents are on the roof, cleaning up demon carcass. Dante and Mary are arguing over who should keep the amulet and Mary, even after all of this, is still putting her faith in DARKCOM. I think this may be why I’m irritated with her. Unbeknownst to her, the vice president is just calling her an attack dog who sometimes must be brought to heel and I can’t help but just roll my eyes.

Because of course, Baines betrays Mary’s faith in him and also tries to kill Dante. The possible shoutout is only prevented because the upgraded bunny attacks the vice president’s men, Even a team-up between Dante and Mary isn’t enough to take him down. Even the death of Enzo, his agent? broker? who tried to take on the upgraded demon bunny, doesn’t turn the tide because Dante’s Devil Trigger isn’t fully triggered.

Eventually, the demon bunny makes Dante bleed and successfully transform the Sword of Sparda into its true form. And he does this by dropping the bomb on Dante that his brother Vergil is still very much alive. BUT this same revelation is also what triggers the…uhm…Devil Trigger and Dante finally defeats the demon bunny. Of course, he could have done it earlier because how does that help anybody now that the wall between worlds has been torn down?

BUT WAIT. It does help! With the demon bunny defeated, for real this time, Dante removes his and Vergil’s pendant from their father’s sword and restores the wall between worlds once more. Yay, I guess.

Dante and Mary have a post-heroics talk after the wall is restored and I finally realize why I’m irritated by Mary — she acts like every lone wolf male hero who’s had an angsty past. I can’t bear it with male characters and I guess I also can’t bear it even with female characters. So maybe I was only slightly misogynistic? Add to that the fact that she decides to take Dante to the vice president despite the already questionable interaction she had with him earlier. I am so over it.

And the vice president? Basically acting like Gabriel from Keanu Reeves’ Constantine.

But unlike Gabriel, the vice president actually succeeds and manages to launch a holy war on the demon realm and I can’t believe I’m saying this but it feels too heavy-handed, even for a dumb person like me? America unleashes war on the demon realm much like they did in Afghanistan and Iraq and much like the genocide they’re abetting in Palestine and as much as I have no problem with America being portrayed as the bad guy I just wish it was done with more finesse or subtlety?

Anyways, the invasion provides a set-up for Dante and Vergil to reunite and confront each other so there’s that, I guess.
