I’m going to be real honest…I thought that with the time difference this would air tomorrow here in the country. But apparently it’s airing on a Friday-Friday. Friday on my side of the world! Let’s get into it!
We dive immediately into the format of this new All Stars, which is going to involve brackets and teams and the queens who have the highest points in their brackets get to move forward. Up first is the orange team, which is made up of Aja, Deja Skye, Irene the Alien, Phoenix (all the way from Season 3, damn), Olivia Lux, and Bosco who is bring body. Goddamn!
All that said, I kinda found the queens’ entrances a little underwhelming but let’s see where the rest of the episode goes! The first Maxi Challenge is a music video to “Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner”. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!
Also, the editing when it came to Olivia Lux’s talking head? Chef’s kiss. Also is that foreshadowing? Are Bosco and Aja going to be part of the top three of this bracket? Is Deja going to be one of the queens sent home? Maybe not quite because so far her talking head has been entertaining.
The queens start writing their verses and Irene says she’s a performer but is self-aware enough to know that these other queens she’s competing with have much more Drag Race experience than she does. As so many queens have said before, one can be good at drag but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to be good at Drag Race.
During the walkthrough, Irene looks like she’s being set up for something. There’s a lot of talk about her being the Porkchop and this being a make or break moment for her so either she’s going to be in the bottom for this one or she’s going to be in the top. Let’s see!
Deja also shares the harrowing story of her…lipsuction?…in Mexico and I very much relate to just not knowing why you do the things you do with your body. There are days when I’m fine with the shape of my body and then there are the bleak days when I just can’t.
Actually, I think all the queens are getting a good block of the airtime sharing their stories and I am all for it. It was enlightening to hear Aja’s struggles with going back on the show and dealing with transitioning, so funny to hear Bosco talk about money and lobotomies. Hopefully this format lets audiences learn more about these queens.
It’s honestly hard to get a feel for who’s going to be the top queens this episode because the editing is very…safe. There’s no overt clues as to who’s going to dominate because they’re all getting very balanced portrayals(?) in the rehearsal. Even Irene’s rehearsal footage has Jamal taking note of her excitement, even if it looks like she has the “worst” footage. But then again maybe I spoke too soon because we get to Phoenix’s footage and…well, she needs to have a talk with her inner saboteur because she’s the only one standing in her way.
And then the girls start fighting! Or at least Aja and Irene do and that fucking loading sign read? FUCKKKKK. And Irene bringing up FaceTune and shit? Aja has more volume and bluster but I think if this was a reading challenge, Irene definitely won.
The runway starts with the theme being Slits and Tits and I want to emphasize that I am not a fashion person. But so far the outfit that I liked was Bosco’s, Olivia Lux’s, and Phoenix’s. We don’t know if that’s going to have any bearing on the final judgment, though! As for the music video? Well, the queens performed, that’s for sure. I thought Aja had the better written verse while Irene had the best voice. But overall I thought the music video was…a video.
During the critiques I kinda felt bad for Phoenix because she really got the one truly negative one from Ice Spice while everyone else got mostly positive critiques. Even the negative one Deja got from Ross was just to have bigger tits, while Ice Spice told Phoenix that she can’t tell that she’s an icon. But Irene is definitely going to be in the top this episode because they just loved here and I was so happy for her especially when she started tearing up.
And it’s Irene and Aja in the top! They lip sync to Ice Spice’s “Think U the Shit (Fart)” and while I think Irene did a good job, you’re just not going to win against Aja with a hip hop song. It’s not gonna happen. Aja’s got that on lock. Aja takes the win, gets $10,000, and an extra point!
Now we get the twist with the points — the bottom four queens each get one point but they need to decide who to give those points to. I’m not clear on whether it’s just to one queen or what but we’ll find out in the next episode!
