We saw Ginger and Daya emerge as the frontrunners in the previous episode, so now let’s see if this is going to be an Irene and Bosco situation or is it going to be a Tina Burner “only win in the first round” situation.
The queens go back to the Werk Room to discuss points and Acid immediately shares that she isn’t planning on giving her point to either Ginger or Daya. She also thinks that she and Denali should have won and I don’t blame her because I thought the same thing.
There’s a little rigmarole about the queens not being sure who they’re going to give their points too but come on. It’s obvious they were going to give it to their partners. Controversial and divisive as it was, only Mistress Isabelle Brooks could have pulled off that point stealing scheme.
There’s not much of a discussion in the Werk Room the next day before RuMail arrives, and the queens are told that…there’s a mini challenge this week. I think this is the first time they’ve shown a mini challenge for this season! It’s a Clueless-themed photoshoot! I was literally around when this movie hit it big!
Denali wins the mini challenge and gets a $1,000 cash tip! They’re also told that the girl group challenge is going to be this week’s Maxi Challenge, and I thought that Denali would be assigned with forming the groups, but I guess that’s not the case.
As they listen to the tracks, Ginger, Denali, and Alyssa immediately call dibs on the “whore” song “Trailer Hitch”, but Daya and Acid also want that same song. That’s going to be a problem as they’re supposed to be in groups of three so two of the queens need to give way. Alyssa looks liek she’s not going to be that queen because she rightfully points out that she already has a problem with English so having to pick a song she’s not that into would make things even harder for her.
Daya is the first one to give up, followed by Ginger who stresses that she is country and that she has a country album out there. Alyssa, Acid, and Denali end up being team “Trailer Hitch”, while Ginger, Daya, and Cynthia are team “Key Your Car”.
Cynthia feel like their team is going to win, especially since Daya and Ginger have both done The Rocky Horror Picture Show. They’ve also decided to name their group the Mud Flaps, while Alyssa, Acid, and Denali are the Whiskey Chicks. We get the usual “Oh we’re going to win this” discussions within the two teams but at this point in the franchise, we know that we’re only going to get a feel of who’s going to win when the rehearsals start.
The queens head off to record their parts and Orville Peck is waiting for them! I liked his version of “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other”!
The queens start recording and Ginger and Daya are off to a good start but its Cynthia who starts slipping up first, and I do not blame her for this at all because English isn’t even her first language! And she gets it together thanks to Orville’s help.
Acid’s turn also isn’t as great and Daya saying in the confessionals that Acid doesn’t sound bad, she’s just not on pitch or on key or on tempo had me CACKLING. But this may not end up as happily for Acid when the actual performance happens.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, Alyssa also isn’t very good so at least Acid can commisserate with someone? It’s starting to look like Denali is the only one among the Whiskey Chicks who is actually going to perform well.
I thought they were going to get Jamal Sims for the dance rehearsal, but it looks like the queens are choreographing themselves! It looks like this is the Mud Flaps weak spot since they finish the rehearsal not looking very good, in my opinion, but this might just be production lulling me into thinking they’re not going to win. In comparison, the Whiskey Chicks look much better, especially with Acid Betty revealing that she’s actually a trained dancer. She didn’t share this during her original season?
As they prepare for the main stage, Acid, Cynthia, and Alyssa start discussing the possibility of Ginger and Daya winning again. Acid isn’t going to take that lying down and declares that she should maybe be more strategic. She suggests to Cynthia and Alyssa that maybe they could pool their points and pick someone to send to the top, which to be fair wasn’t suggested in the earlier brackets. Let’s see if this happens!
The performances start and I like “Key Your Car”! It might just be another win for Ginger and Daya! The Whiskey Flaps aren’t bad either, but Alyssa definitely was not the strongest performer and might just cost them the win. Unless of course the queens are judged individually.
On the runway, the queens are given the theme “Night of a Thousand Mileys” and…well, I’m not as familiar with her so I guess most of the looks were okay? I’m not into the inspirations so much, so this runway wasn’t really that interesting for me.
The critiques start and Acid Betty gets really good comments! Denali also gets really good comments so it might just be the two of them in the top, if the Mud Flaps get bad reviews. But they don’t! All three of them got good responses from the judges so it really might be another Ginger and Daya win.
And I was half right because it’s Denali and Ginger on the top! And maybe it’s just my age or I’ve watched too many seasons of Drag Race — been around since Season 2! — but I appreciated Ginger’s lip sync more? Althoguh that flip to an upright position from Denali was impressive!
Looks like Ru agrees with me because she declares Ginger the winner! Although to be quite frank this should have been the double win instead of what happened in episode five.
