Hannibal caught Katz snooping around in his house in the previous episode, and…well. I’m not holding out hope that she survives because in the books and movies, it’s only Will and Clarice that survives an encounter with Hannibal.
The opening scene of this new episode is Hannibal cooking, so you already know that it didn’t end well for Katz. Is she literally being cooked right now? Is Hannibal serving Katz to Crawford? Making the scene even more twisted is Hannibal acting like saving Bella was something he did to uphold his duty as a doctor and not something he left to chance.
We then shift to Lounds, who has come back to the observatory where she had to hold on to Chilton’s insides. What new horror has Hannibal prepared for her? We don’t get to see it immediately, but Lounds does take pictures of it. So it must be truly horrifying.
When Crawford arrives and Lounds tells him “She’s one of yours” I immediately know that its Katz and I guess she at least didn’t get cooked and eaten and served to Crawford? But is what she turned out any better? Hannibal turned her into that horse from that one scene in The Cell.
Of course, news of Katz’s death eventually reaches Will, who expresses a wish to see her body. They even gave him the proto-Hannibal mask for his little field trip out of the mental health institution.

Will being Will, he correctly deduces that it’s the Chesapeake Ripper that Katz encountered. He knows that Hannibal did this, but he keeps this information from Crawford because Crawford is unlikely to believe him anyway.
At the FBI, the lab boys find that the kidney in Katz’s body is that of the Muralist, which tells them that whoever has Katz’s kidney is her killer. Unfortunately for them, Hannibal is already using it as an ingredient for a dish, so they’re unlikely to find that now. Now who will he be feeding Katz to? Just himself, apparently, and from the smile on his face, Katz must have been delicious.
Back at Chilton’s hospital, Will has convinced him to let him speak to Gideon, who I thought died in episode 11 last season, but I guess I was wrong! They both know that Hannibal is the Chesapeake Ripper, but Gideon refuses to cooperate and be a witness for Will. He tells Will that he has to kill Hannibal, which I guess is what lead to the opening scene in the first episode of the season.
Chilton, on the other hand, continues to be a douche and is spending time with Hannibal, probably to gloat or to talk about Will’s therapy, despite his deal with him. And he does do that, in a way. He’s not being fully honest with Hannibal, but Hannibal is definitely clever enough to ascertain what it is Chilton’s really doing.
And would you look at that, Hannibal gets the opportunity to interview Gideon. Much to Chilton’s chagrin, the conversation Hannibal and Gideon have is indecipherable unless he was there in the room with them. Gideon assures Hannibal that he doesn’t plan to turn against him, and also warns him that Will still very much thinks he’s the Chesapeake Ripper.
Hannibal and Gideon’s meeting isn’t the only interview that’s happening inside Chilton’s hospital either. Lounds comes in for an interview that Will asked for. Will tells her that he wants to talk to his ~admirer~ through her website, and he’s willing to give exclusive rights to his story to her.
It also looks like Hannibal isn’t the only admirer that Will has, because the orderly that’s been moving him around for the past few episodes appears to be another serial killer, who’s spent enough time in mental institutions to learn how to fake it. We then find out that it was the orderly who killed the bailiff but not the judge, which is a surprise to me. I thought Hannibal killed them both. Either way, it’s not the person Will thought would answer his ~love letter~ on Lounds’ website but he’s not letting this new ~friend~ go to waste. He tells the orderly that he wants him to kill Hannibal Lecter, but unfortunately, Gideon overhears this conversation.
The next day, Alana Bloom asks Will for an explanation about his Lounds’ interview, since he’s a well-known Lounds hater. Will’s responses to Alana’s questions are inscrutable, so she asks Chilton to let her interview Gideon instead. Gideon is easier to understand, and it’s through him that Alana discovers Will’s plan to kill Hannibal.
That plan almost succeeds, with the orderly even arranging a ~Judeo-Christian~ tableau where Hannibal has the choice of either hanging himself or bleeding out. Unfortunately, it’s this insistence on drama that allows Crawford to catch him in the act and shoot him, saving Hannibal in the process.
