Ron Watches Heartstopper Season 2 Episode 8

Everything fell apart in the previous episode, with Charlie’s eating disorder becoming more apparent and Darcy running away from home. Now all that’s left is the season finale!

Nick starts the day off with a bang by posting a picture of him and Charlie on Instagram and declaring that the two of them are boyfriends and that he’s bi, actually. And of course, Charlie is over the moon about that.

DID SOMEONE SAY OVER THE MOON

Charlie is definitely happy enough about the coming out that he doesn’t even mind the comments on the post. He thinks everything is perfect, which is of course the signal that everything is not perfect. There’s something that’s going to fuck everything up, looming on the horizon.

Over at the heterosexuals’ table, Nick and Elle also make it official that they’re boyfriend-girlfriend. Looks like things are going well over there as well! Wish I could say the same about the lesbians, but it appears that Darcy hasn’t told the truth about her situation to Tara, and it’s leading to chaos at the prom venue, where things aren’t set up properly yet.

Tara asks the gang to help out and while that sort of fixes things, it brings other issues to the forefront. Nick is definitely noticing that Charlie isn’t that ready for all the attention, and he also has a heart-to-heart talk with Tao about how he thinks that all the bullying that Charlie endured still affects him, even though it’s over. And maybe I’m just misremembering things, but I think Nick had this conversation with his mom? Or maybe not? I’m probably misremembering.

It’s the day of the prom! Charlie and Nick find each other cute — of course — and Nick even offers Charlie an out in case he thinks the public spectacle of a prom is too much for him, but Charlie is okay to go. Meanwhile, Darcy still hasn’t gotten in touch with Tara, who doesn’t know that Darcy spent the night in a playground. It looks like heterosexuals Tao and Elle are the only ones without any pre-prom hiccups! I call homophobia!

As the prom goes on, as is de rigueur by now in any form of media, a lot of the characters get realizations. The adult homosexuals set another date, Nick gives Tara some advice on how to talk to someone about something that they don’t wanna talk about, advice that he’s probably repeating to himself about Charlie’s eating disorder, and Imogen, known LGBTQIA+ ally, might not just be an ally at all. She might actually be a member of the alphabet mafia.

Trouble starts when Darcy finally arrives to the prom and the gang realizes that Tara has gone elsewhere to find where Darcy is. Tara’s search takes her to Darcy’s home, where she meets Darcy’s mother. And what can we say about Darcy’s mother other than she’s homophobic?

And well, the conversation Tara and Darcy have about Darcy being afraid to say I love you back because Tara may not like the side of her she doesn’t show in school? Made me tear up. Haven’t full-on cried because of this show just yet, but there have been close calls!

The gang has a fun time with each other at Nick’s house, which is pretty wholesome and fun and very not like Skins at all, which is how I view all UK teen parties.

Once the party’s over and it’s just Charlie and Nick at the house, Nick bites the bullet and asks Charlie straight up about the bullying he faced. Charlie, on his part, also bites the bullet and tells Nick everything, even the part where he used to cut himself because of how the bullying made him feel. And all of it is a sweet, genuinely moving moment that a lot of gay adults would have wanted to hear when they were gay kids. And I don’t know if this is the proper film terms for it but it’s shot so quietly so the moment feels more important?
