AI companies sued by Canadian author

AI and publishing continue to be at odds as another class action lawsuit has been filed against the companies Nvidia, Meta, Anthropic, and Databricks Inc. The lawsuit has been filed by Canadian author and representative plaintiff J.B. MacKinnon, and alleges that the four companies “illegally used copyrighted works by Canadian writers to train artificial intelligence systems”.
This new lawsuit comes after U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled that “three writers suing the AI company Anthropic for copyright infringement can represent all other authors whose books the AI company allegedly pirated to train its AI model as part of a class action lawsuit.”
Publishers Weekly reports that MacKinnon is asking for an injunction to prevent Nvidia from continuing to infringe on the copyrights of Canadian authors, an accounting of profits, and punitive damages from Nvidia, which MacKinnon claims used his work without asking for consent or securing licensing fees.

James Patterson to write non-fiction book on Luigi Mangione

There’s very few people online who don’t know who Luigi Mangione is, and for those who want to know even more about him, there’s an upcoming book that might just be what they need.
The Guardian reports that author James Patterson and investigative journalist Vicky Ward will be coming out with a book that tells the story “of one young man’s descent from Ivy League graduate to notorious accused killer to so-called political martyr.” No title and publishing date has been set as of now, but at least interested readers now have a heads up.
National Competition on Storybook Writing accepting manuscripts
Teachers, educators, and students can now submit their manuscripts to the National Competition on Storybook Writing for the 2025 Gawad Teodora Alonso. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know about this competition before but it seems like a good opportunity for these students and educators.
