We’re now in the semi-finals after Kam’s elimination in the previous episode. Let’s get into it!
The queens go back to the Werk Room after Kam’s elimination, and I think it’s pretty clear that Moon is going to be sent home this episode as she’s the only one who doesn’t have a badge. She’s gotten close to winning one, but at this point I don’t think production will give her a chance to win one and will just send her home.
We also find out that Elips chose to save Kam, and she really seems hung up about Kam going home. She also tells Misty straight up that she feels Kam has never wavered in her desire to get to the finals, while Misty seems demotivated and uninterested to continue with the competition. So, this will either light a fire under Misty’s ass or it’s going to be her and Moon in the bottom this episode.
The next morning, Moon resolves that she’s going to win a badge this episode because she correctly notes that it’s going to be very difficult for her to get into the finals if she’s the only one without one. Unfortunately, I think her saying that just means production has marked her for death.
We get to the mini challenge with season 1’s Lova Ladiva, which has the queens doing a The Weakest Link parody. They did this in season three and from my post about it at the time, it seems like Misty was pretty funny in that one. Let’s see if she manages to do the same in this All Stars edition.
Well, Misty gets eliminated in this one, but this The Weakest Link parody is funny even for me who doesn’t know anything about French pop culture. The gay animal sounds were particularly hilarious for me. And Moon actually won something! It’s not going to matter since this is Drag Race France, but she won something!
AND the show proves me wrong, because Moon gets the power to arrange the order of the queens in the Maxi Challenge, which is a roast. Misty and Elips aren’t as confident going out as themselves for the roast, so they’re planning to do characters, which has worked for other queens as well. Moon also decides on the order by asking them point-blank, which is how we end with Mami as the first act and Elips closing out the show.
As the queens prepare for the roast, we get to hear about their post-Drag Race France lives. Elips’ family started to understand her drag after the first season aired, and the same thing happened between Piche and his straight twin brother. Mami Watta’s story is a little more dramatic, with her not talking with her parents for a time after Drag Race France. Her parents still don’t fully understand what she’s doing, but at least they’re on speaking terms now. They even lent her money to buy wigs, which I think is a pretty huge deal, especially since a wig is a degrading investment. It’s only going to lose its value as time passes.
The roast starts and for the most part, it does get laughs out of me, but I feel like I would find it funnier if I spoke French or knew more of the references? I feel like Misty’s set, for instance, required French pop culture knowledge for the punchlines to really hit, especially after Elips said that it was very well-written.
Then we get to Piche’s set and…I guess it’s going to be her and Moon in the bottom! I actually think Moon did pretty well with her set, but I have already convinced myself that production is going to send her home this episode. Sorry about it!
We then get to the “Long Live the Queen” runway, and Mami Watta kills it right out of the gate. Piche’s was great as well, but that Mami Watta outfit referencing her tribe in Cote d’Ivoire was just stunning. For once, Piche is overshadowed on the runway.
Before we get to the critiques, the queens are asked why they think they should win the competition, and I think they all pled their case okay! When the judges finally give their critiques, it’s pretty clear that Piche and Moon are going to be in the bottom. I think that whoever ends up in the top, it’s going to be Moon going home.
Mami and Misty are in the top two and Piche and Moon are in the bottom, and even before the lip sync starts I just wanna say au revoir to Moon. You put up a good fight! But I don’t see any path for you to go into the finals that wouldn’t piss off the fans. She even acknowledges that it wouldn’t be fair for someone without a badge to head into the finals.
The lip sync starts and I can’t really tell who did better! But Nicky picks Mami as the winner and she wins her third badge, pretty much cementing her win in the finale. She also sends Moon home, just as the stars and the lack of badges foretold.
