At the end of the previous episode, Charlie finally came clean to Nick and his parents about his mental health problems. Relly good work from Joe Locke and Kit Connor there! Let’s dive right in to the next episode!
This halfway point of the season is set two months after Charlie’s confession and after he got himself some help. Just like in the book, the show uses Nick’s journaling as a way to look back on the two months that have passed. I know it’s been months since I read the book, so I might be misremembering, but I think the book visually was more creative in showing how the time passed? But again, I might be misremembering.
When it gets to the part where Nick says Charlie doesn’t want any visitors, my mind immediately goes to Katya sharing her rehab experience. And yes, Katya and Charlie are undergoing two very different things, but that’s just how my mind works, okay? I can’t help it!
Halloween rolls around, and I know he’s British and all, but that Captain America costume really does work for Nick and Kit Connor. And that scene where Nick has tears in his eyes as he says I love you to Nick in the video Tao is preparing? Great work from Kit. I just love in shows and movies when the actors tear up, but the tears don’t fall, or just one tear falls down. I just think it looks so good!
Elsewhere in the party, Sahar and Imogen finally make out, but then as the night passes, things devolve, with Sahar walking away angry and Imogen puking in the bathroom, saying that she’s allowed to experiment. It all very felt Skins-lite!
We then get Charlie’s side from his journals, and it’s understandably more somber than Nick’s. I think the best way to describe how Charlie’s talking about his experience is age appropriate? I’ve seen similar scenes from other shows and movies, and those are much more harrowing. But I wouldn’t recommend the young teens who watch Heartstopper to watch those just yet.
Also, I could feel the arthritis in my bones the moment Nick talke about Tao having a ~vintage camera~. If the ~vintage camera~ is the one that Tao has been holding throughout the episode, I am indeed very old, because I remember when those cameras were new. Just dig a hole in the ground for me and leave me alone.
Again, I may just be misremembering, but I don’t think this video was in the book, and I think it’s a great addition. The book was kinda laser focused on just Nick and Charlie, and it’s nice to see how the other members of the friend group were affected by Charlie’s time in treatment.
Of course, the episode ends with Nick and Charlie reuniting after months apart. This was a chill episode following the intensity of the previous one, and a nice breather before the show ramps up the action or the tension or whatever as we head to the end of the season.
