Another Heartstopper post? Yes, it’s another one. I’m trying to catch up on everything I’ve fallen behind on last month because of a hectic work schedule, and I also want to actually finish watching these shows and check out other ones. So here we go!
We start the episode with Tara in a ballet class, Nick and Charlie being touch-feely in class and at home, and Nick even fantasizing about making out with Charlie on the rugby field. I think this is going to be the sex episode, you guys.
But of course, there’s also something underneath the calm that Tara and Nick are both feeling. With both their partners sort of getting to a stable point in their lives, the two of them are realizing that they’ve neglected their own lives, which is a valid thing to feel!
Over at school, it’s time for sex education, and Tao and Isaac are ~tired~ of hearing Charlie second-guess wanting to have sex with Nick. Tao tells him to just get it over with, and I gotta be honest, I wish somebody told me that when I was younger because while sex can be good, it’s not the most important thing in the world. Also, Nick telling Charlie to try putting on a condom on Nick’s dick???? I mean, that wasn’t the exact phrasing, but I know what you meant, young man!
Meanwhile, Elle is still reeling from the disastrous interview from the previous episode. Like I said in the previous post, you don’t spring something like that on someone so young because when you’re just a teenager, sometimes you don’t want to be talking about the politics of it all. There’s also the fact that she’s a teenager that may not be equipped with the facts and the life experience to deal with all of that.
Since they’re white, cisgender males, Nick and Charlie do not are about Elle at all and head to Nick’s home to finally do it, but this time around it’s Nick’s brother that cockblocks them. Also, in case it wasn’t clear, Nick and Charlie not caring about Elle is a joke, please do not stone me in the town square. But the two of them aren’t backing down from the wanting to have sex agenda. The two of them still talk about it on their phones.
Over at Tao’s house, he’s doing the best that he can to make Elle feel better about the interview, while Darcy is doing the same for Tara over at her house by having sex with her. I like that it’s only the heterosexual couple that isn’t getting any action this episode, because I think that Nick and Charlie are gonna do it by the end of this episode.
The day before the end of school, Charlie gets told to apply as head boy. I remember this from the book! I don’t think this was resolved in the books, either, so I guess we’re all going to find out at the same time when the movie comes out.
We also don’t know where Elle’s story is going, because the show has been better at giving her layers and depth than the books. And I like that the show recognizes that your romantic partner may not be able to fulfill all of your emotional needs, because that’s just life, and that’s why having a community is important.
Nick is certainly making use of that community right now as he asks Tara for sex advice. And the ~aghast~ reaction as he finds out that Tara and Darcy had sex at school? Hilarious. Also, Wilhelm and Simon from Young Royals have sex at school all the time, there’s nothing to it. But aside from sex advice, Tara also reminds Nick that he doesn’t always have to be the strong one in the relationship.
Over at Charlie’s house, he tries his luck with asking his mother about sleeping over at Nick’s place, and he gets a no from his very anxious mom. I can’t blame Charlie for thinking that his mom always thinks of him as a child, but he legally is and when you grow up even more, you’re going to think “Why did my parents let me do certain things as a 16-year-old, I was a literal child?” But it also doesn’t help Charlie’s mom’s case that she’s always been like this and has never given Charlie any leeway, or explained her own hang-ups that come from how she was raised. In short, it’s not just Charlie who needs therapy. The two of them do.
Elle, at least, is having a slightly better day, as Tao shows her the video she’s made for her. Let’s give Tao some credit here for admitting that he may not always get what Elle is going through, but promising that he’ll always try to understand whatever it is.
Meanwhile, Charlie finally arrives at Nick’s home, unaware that Nick is anxious about leaving him behind, limiting his options as to what to do after school. He’s not looking at universities outside where they live, even if some of the programs may interest him. But he doesn’t get the chance to talk about his anxieties, because Charlie gets to do it first, and also because Charlie just outright says he wants to have sex with him. To be fair, that really would be distracting, especially with all your teenage hormones running amok.
But Nick manages to fight through all that and tells Charlie that he doesn’t feel as strong without him. And to Charlie’s credit, he listens to all of Nick’s anxieties, and supports him with his feelings. That the whole vulnerable moment leads to them finally having sex is just a bonus, I think.
This is a new addition to the posts, but if any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
