Started watching this show yesterday, and if I’m going to watch the entire first season before the second one debuts in December, I need to keep at it. So here’s me watching episode two!
Percy saw his mother…die? in the previous episode, and by the end of the episode, Percy managed to slay the Minotaur and also get into Camp Half-Blood, if I’m remembering the name right. It’s been more than a decade since I watched the movie, you guys! And I didn’t read the books!
Percy wakes up in what I assume is an infirmary the next day, with one of the Minotaur’s horns on a table near his bed, and a memory of Annabeth — he doesn’t know her yet — telling him that he drools in his sleep. Grover’s also there, but Percy isn’t exactly excited to talk to him because not only did he get him expelled from human school, he also failed to save his mother from the Minotaur.
He walks outside and the first adult he finds turns out to be Dionysus, except Dionysus has a Coke can with him. A choice that I understand, of course! You can’t have him drunk on actual wine in a kid’s show!
ALSO DID SOMEONE SAY DIONYSUS?
Stream it on Spotify too!
Anyways, Percy asks him this really sincere question about needing to meet his father right now and maybe Dionysus could help him out, but Dionysus really just wants that wine, you know? But before he can get that bottle, Chiron walks up and tells him that no, Dionysus is not his father and that demigods can do certain things that gods are restricted from doing. Interesting.
Chiron takes Percy on a little walk, and after the requisite explanation of how the magical world works, Percy gets told that his father hasn’t claimed him yet. Awkward. So, while he’s still unclaimed, he gets to room in the Hermes house, which also houses the unclaimed children of other gods. He expects to get bullied again, but instead gets some sympathy from Luke, who if I am remembering the movie correctly has something to do with the bigger plot. Or maybe I am misremembering!
We then get to see Grover talking to the Cloven Council, which I definitely do not remember from the movie. I like that Grover is more than the comedic relief in this show! Also, was the wood creature/wood nymph his mom? Anyways, it’s through the Cloven Council that I find out that Percy’s mom isn’t dead yet, but is with Hades.
But both Chiron and Dionysus want to keep the truth from Percy, because “there are powerful forces at work…forces that have laid waste to the Earth before and are close to doing it again”, per Dionysus. Guys, it’s always the keeping secrets part that blows up in your faces later on. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, so let it out into the light!
Meanwhile, Percy continues to dream of a voice calling out to him, but when he wakes up from this particular dream, he’s surrounded by people who have also been experiencing troubling dreams all their life, along with the ADHD and dyslexia that Percy also has. Luke continues to act the role of Percy’s big brother, which I guess will make his villain turn later more effective. If I’m remembering the movie correctly.
Luke tells him that ~glory~ will get people to either leave him alone or take positive notice of him, and Percy sees it as a way for his father to notice him. Here’s where we get a training montage! The two skills that Percy tries out just aren’t him, but Luke isn’t giving up yet and is determined to find what it is that Percy is good at.
And what Percy is good at is water bending! I mean, not water bending, but you guys know what I mean. He finds this out when the Ares kids led by Clarissa try to push his face into the toilet, but he uses the water to get them off him. Annabeth sees all of this happen, and recruits Percy to be part of her team for Capture the Flag and ensure her fourth straight victory.
We also find out more about Annabeth and Luke, their sad backgrounds, and about forbidden kids. The forbidden kids are children of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades that were born after the Big Three decided not to have any more children because the children are too powerful and attract too many monsters. And I remember enough of the movie to know that Percy is one of those forbidden kids. He’s a son of Poseidon!
But that’s something that Percy will have to discover about himself later on, because now he’s got to help Annabeth win Capture the Flag. He doesn’t know how, but I suspect it involves luring Clarissa away, which is what he does because Clarissa is so intent on making him admit that he didn’t defeat the Minotaur.
And that was the plan! Clarissa is distracted, allowing Luke’s team to capture the flag. Percy also manages to defend himself well enough against Clarissa and her two goons, and even destroys what I assume is a gift from Ares. He even gets claimed by Poseidon after Annabeth pushes him into the water after all is said and done.
However, Poseidon claiming him comes with a hefty responsibility. Chiron reveals that Zeus’ master bolt has been stolen, and he suspects Percy of being the one who stole it. Percy has to return/retrieve the master bolt in a week, or war between the gods will break out. Chiron suspects the master bolt was actually stolen by Hades, and would you look at that, Percy’s mother is also with Hades. But it’s not Chiron or Dionysus who brings up this fact; it’s Grover, and it’s what actually convinces Percy to go on the quest. See! Honesty is the best policy!
