Ron Watches Drag Race España Season 5 Episode 9

After sending home multiple queens, the previous episode finally saw Alexandra be sent home by Dafne Mugler. Who’s going home next? Let’s find out!

Nix is hit hard by Alexandra’s departure, and Satin is sad as well. But as Satin herself also points out, that’s the game. They then congratulate Dafne for surviving the lip sync and Margarita for winning, and then talk about how there’s just one episode left before the finale.

The next day, the queens don’t even get the chance to gossip around the table as Supremme…mail? immediately arrives. Supremme says that even if they don’t win, they’ll be big names in their hometowns, stressing that rural Pride celebrations are also important, and I agree! It shouldn’t just be celebrations in the big cities that get all the praise.

Supremme walks into the Werk Room, and after doing the customary listing down of prizes, she shows videos of the queen’s family members and close friends sending greetings to them. Supremme hopes that the messages give them a boost of energy, because this episode is the makeover episode and it’s not going to be easy. The makeover subjects then walk in and it’s the queens’ family and close friends and seeing Margarita shout ¡Ay, mi madre! as her mom walks in? So sweet.

And it’s just sweetness all around as the queens prepare. I like this because it’s a break from the tension of the past few episodes. Just the queens getting to have a fun time with their family and found family. I also love how they talk about the different cultures they each have in their hometowns. I think that’s one characteristic that you find in all the successful international Drag Race franchises — they lean in to their culture rather than shy away from it.

I also love the honest conversation that Nix and her mother have about transitioning. I love that Nix understands that her mom is mourning the image of that child she thought she had, and that she let her mom go through that process. And in the end, Nix’s mom was very supportive! Sometimes, you just need to give the people that you love and who love you time to process their feelings.

The runway starts and I just have to point out Ana Locking mentioning Manila Luzon. Uy, Pilipins!

YES I KNOW SHE MEANS THE DRAG QUEEN BUT WHO IS THE DRAG QUEEN NAMED AFTER? YES THE FORMER COLONY.

Anyways, the outfits I liked were Dafne and Satin’s. Laca’s was a little Midsommar to me, but the mustache on her mom? Chef’s kiss. And it’s exactly these opinions are why I am not a fashion person because the judges pointed out what was lacking in Dafne and Satin’s outfits for their makeover subjects. When Ana Locking says the dress is not as fitted as they could, I defer to her! I also did not know how important the Virgin is to Valencian culture, and how well Laca referenced it. I only Googled it after the fact!

After the deliberations and the queens are back on the runway, Supremme does the whole “What would you say to your younger self?” schtick that I’ve always been meh about in all the franchises, but having the family there to see it? Maybe this is the way, because this didn’t feel as meh as it usually is to me. I was even moved when it was Margarita’s turn! Laca’s conversation with his younger self was also touching.

Laca wins the challenge and is the first finalist! Dafne and Margarita are the bottom two, and I gotta admire Drag Race España for the ruthlessness of having this emotional episode and then crushing the emotions of the makeover subjects even more by having their family member lip sync. Damn. I thought it was going to be an episode where everyone’s safe!

JESUS CHRIST YOU’VE GOT MARGARITA’S MOTHER CRYING. THESE PEOPLE ARE RUTHLESS. AND THEY REALLY SENT A QUEEN HOME. THEY SENT DAFNE HOME. DAMN.

I mean, I think Margarita won the lip sync, but couldn’t this have been an episode where both of them stayed, just so the family members don’t feel bad? Jesus Christ.

If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
