We’re getting closer and closer to the end of the season, with the previous episode insinuating that Will offered up Freddie Lounds to Hannibal as…dinner? Let’s see if Freddie is still alive!
We start of with a scene that shows Will metaphorically being born again as a killer, and then Hannibal serving an ortolan bunting. When he was describing how it was cooked, I thought it was made up, but then I looked it up and the French actually did the thing. i mean, they cam up with foie gras, so should I have been surprised? I don’t think the production actually served a real ortolan bunting, so I wonder what they used?
After swallowing down that bird, Will confesses that he was euphoric when he killed Freddie Lounds, and then Hannibal compliments him on his low heart rate while doing it. It’s all very much a teacher-student thing, and Hannibal is looking like a very proud teacher.
Elsewhere in…the United States? a wheelchair with a burning body strapped onto it is careening down parking. It’s how Freddie Lounds died in the book and movie, so is this the show telling us that she’s dead, or is it a misdirect?
It looks like it’s Freddie! They had the dental records and everything! The corpse also had muscle removed, which is probably what Will and Hannibal ate. Will recalls the metaphor Hannibal used during their dinner, saying that whoever killed Freddie used her as “fuel”, with Hannibal looking fondly at him and saying that the killer is the one to be noticed now.
Meanwhile, Margot is pregnant, thanks to her having sex with him in the previous episode. She shares it during her therapy session with Hannibal, with Will also in the room. But since Margot only needs a man to have a baby, she doesn’t want anything else from Will. She’s not opposed if Will wants to become a male influence in the child’s life, if it means having her brother out of the picture.
So what is Mason doing while this is going down? Literally drinking children’s tears. I thought that the show was going to show a child actually getting physically abused, but thankfully(?), they went with just making the child cry. I can’t watch a child get physically abused, even if it’s all pretend. Sorry, I just can’t.
The next day, Alana pays a visit to Will, who she suspects of killing Freddie Lounds. At this point in their relationship, Will doesn’t really care about making himself look innocent in front of Alana, although I don’t know if this is still part of the plan Will and Jack concocted back in episode eight. Will also throws her past actions in her face, telling her that no one believed him when he said Hannibal was a killer and that no one is going to believe her now. When she tells him that Hannibal isn’t good for him, he shoots back with “Hannibal’s good enough for you.” Goddam, Will. He then tells her to practice shooting a gun.
Someone who should have probably gotten some gun training is Mason Verger, especially now that he’s in a therapy session with Hannibal. Is this going to be the episode? Hannibal certainly thinks he’s being rude, if that look Hannibal gave at Mason’s abandoned coat is anything to go by. Is that what prompts him to let it slip that Margot’s pregnant? Well, he’s not exactly saying that Margot’s pregnant, but he does plant the idea in Mason’s head that he can still be overthrown if Margot’s pregnant.
Will and Alana meet again at Freddie Lounds’ funeral, so I guess she really is dead? The two are confrontational with each other, and Will is really underscoring that Hannibal is behind all of this. And Hannibal? Talking fatherhood with Will! We also get another mention of Hannibal’s sister, and Hannibal even mentions the name Mischa, which was the same name in the Hannibal Rising book and movie.
Now you know what’s going to happen with that Hannibal Rising mention. It’s time for Gaspard Ulliel as young Hannibal Lecter.

Look at the material!
Hannibal also confesses to killing Abigail Hobbs, and I hope Will has got a recording of this somewhere because I think this is the first time Hannibal’s said this in front of Will? And Hannibal even apologizes when Will reveals that he still dreams about Abigail. Is that Hannibal looking genuinely sorry?
We’ll have to investigate that emotion in a later episode, because Freddie Lounds’ body has been exhumed and literally given extra limbs. Is this still Will? Alana certainly insinuates it, since she’s also at this particular crime scene. Alana also notes that maybe the benefactor of Freddie Lounds’ killer was the one who did this as some form of courtship. Murder husbands!
Over at the Verger household, Mason is trying to get Margot to have sex with him to form an heir. At least that’s what I’m understanding! Or at the very least, use his sperm to get herself pregnant. That’s what she was waiting for in the book. Will Margot figure out that Hannibal let it slip that she was maybe pregnant?
Hannibal isn’t thinking about that though, as he and Will are talking about Abigail again. The show is really stressing the point that Hannibal and Will are one now, especially with those shots that make it look like Hannibal and Will are talking to themselves and not with each other. And did Hannibal just say that he pushed Margot to have a child with Will so that Abigail could be replaced? Was that his way of apologizing?
Someone Hannibal won’t be apologizing to anytime soon is Mason, who in their most recent therapy session is talking about testing the thickness of Margot’s skin. He still doesn’t know that Margot’s pregnant, but he’s aware that she’s resourceful enough to get herself pregnant if she wanted to. He’s also not forgetting that Margot’s tried to kill him once before, and that he only has an heir once he dies.
It looks like Hannibal’s office is never empty, because after Will and Mason, it’s Alana’s turn, and she’s telling Hannibal that she no longer knows what to believe. Hannibal also finds out that she’s been firing a gun, and I don’t know how this is going to affect Hannibal’s relationship with Will. Is he going to question Will’s transformation into a killer?
Over at the Verger household, Margot tries to make her escape, but is unfortunately stopped by Mason’s minion. We then find her in what looks to be a medical facility, and I think they’re going to abort her baby? Oh my god.
But it’s worse. They’re performing a hysterectomy on her. My goodness. At least when Mason gets what he gets, the audience is going to cheer it on.
Over at the FBI, Alana confronts Jack, because she knows that something is up. Alana has begun to suspect Hannibal, and shares her doubts with Jack. But it’s not just Hannibal she’s doubting, it’s also Will, and she cautions Jack about the dangerous game he’s playing. Jack then springs a surprise on both Alana and the audience — or at least the audience from 10 years ago — and reveals a very much alive Freddie Lounds. Yay!
While Alana’s probably feeling some relief, Will isn’t. He’s found out about what happened to Margot and his child, and now Hannibal is angry for his new friend/boyfriend. But it’s Will who goes to the Verger estate and confronts Mason, and he’s the one who tells him that Hannibal is the one that’s orchestrated all of this. Will is also the one that plants the idea in Mason of feeding Hannibal to his pigs.
