I’ve had a busy few days, so I’m a little behind on this show. But I’m catching up!
We got the quest for this season at the end of the previous episode — retrieve the Golden Fleece. But will Tantalus and Dionysus let them go on that quest?
It might be coming soon, because with the camp’s barrier weakening, Stymphalian birds are attacking the camp. And I know that’s the more pressing concern here but the acting has definitely stepped up for Walker and Leah because they are really giving good energy here.
And it’s not just the two of them either, as there is definite chemistry between Clarisse and this Chris character. Percy’s even smiling at them. Percy is also being a distraction, as Annabeth makes contact with Chiron in Tantalus’ office. Her conversation with Chiron reveals that she is the one that has go on that quest, and Percy must not. It all has to do with a Great Prophecy, which book readers probably already know about but I do not.
This does start a storyline where Annabeth has to lie to Percy, which isn’t one of my faves from young adult novels of that time, but what can you do? But it does allow Tyson to participate in the story more, which I appreciate because he seems like a nice enough young cyclops.
The day of the chariot race arrives and you immediately know that it’s going to be a battle between Annabeth and Percy not just because they’re the main stars, but also because their horses are the only white ones. Also, this chariot race? Exciting! And yet another moment where the show delivers on the grandness I felt was missing from the first season. And then we get the attack of the Stymphalian birds? If this was screening in a moviehouse, I would be on the edge of my seat. And then using Mariah to drive away the birds? The homosexuality of it all.
Since they’re assholes, Dionysus and Tantalus take credit for starting the quest and appoints Clarisse as the champion, who then chooses Annabeth and Chris Rodriguez, the guy she was macking on earlier in the episode. And since Percy has no idea what’s going on, he’s feeling a little betrayed by Annabeth, and I don’t blame him! This also is why I hate when this was popular with books of the time because I feel like it’s such an easy out.
Further complicating Percy’s feelings is the fact that Tyson overheard the conversation between Annabeth and Bronte during the chariot race, where Annabeth told Bronte to take out Percy’s chariot because she can’t do it herself. Percy tells Grover all about it during their dream meeting, and Grover floats the idea that maybe she has a good reason to do so, because Grover did the same with Anastasia Beaverhausen back in the first season.
Despite being told no, Percy sets off to join the quest for the Golden Fleece, because he is the main character and also a white man. He does ask for a sign from his father, who sends Alexander Hamilton to tell Percy that he’s cool with him flouting the rules of the camp. However, Percy isn’t dumb and figures out that Hermes is helping him out because he wants Percy to help Luke out. Luke, after all, is his son.
But before he can hop on a boat to the cruise ship that Hermes has arranged for him to get to the Golden Fleece, Annabeth catches up with him, and they have a confrontation where Percy lays almost all his cards on the table. Annabeth still can’t tell him why, but I feel like she would have delayed things long enough for Clarisse to go on the quest. However, Tantalus’ meddling just sets off a chain of events that just pushes Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson to go on the quest.
If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
