I know, I know. I am very behind. But the last few days of the year had me swamped with work, and it’s only now that I can get back to this. So let’s get into it!
The last episode I watched was episode three, where Annabeth revealed to Percy that a child of either Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades would decide whether the time of the gods will continue on, and that child will decide that once he or she turns 16. How’s Percy going to move forward now that he’s got that information?
The first thing we see in this episode is Annabeth in the sewers, and I am assuming this is happening in the “present”, because the scene is immediately followed by a flashback where Luke comforts a young Annabeth with a cereal trinket. We also get to see our first look at human Thalia before we go back to the present, where Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson are temporarily at since the lifeboat they used to escape from Kronos’ ship has broken down. Percy and Tyson have a heart-to-heart talk about the prophecy, but that’s cut short by Clarisse, who blows up the lifeboat whose motor Tyson just repaired.
Clarisse wants the coordinates to the Sea of Monsters, and while Annabeth tries to broker a more ~peaceful~ arrangement, Percy is a little too confident since he beat Clarisse’s dad in the final episode of season one and challenges her to single combat. The confidence of a white man, indeed. And then Annabeth kills the three members of Clarisse’s crew that could do what she, Percy, and Tyson could do, so now Clarisse has no choice. The movies did not make Annabeth be this fierce!
Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson are now with Clarisse, and have to make a decision on which monster they’re going to face as they enter the Sea of Monsters. I may not be remembering correctly, but didn’t you have to face Scylla and Charybdis together? But the Annabeth tells me I’m a boring, dumb bitch because Odysseus chose Scylla. We also see the softness Clarisse hides beneath her prickly exterior, as she finds it hard to sacrifice her men to Scylla.
While they ponder that problem in the present, we get another look at Annabeth’s past, specifically when she, Luke, and Thalia are told about camp. Looks like Luke already has bad vibes about the Olympians even before getting into camp, but I guess nobody really looked into it since he’s not the only person in camp with an axe to grind with regards to the Olympians. We also get to see why Annabeth isn’t particularly fond of cyclopses, as well as some nice acting work from Leah Sava Jeffries.
It’s not just Leah Sava Jeffries putting in nice work, as Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse has a nice moment when she asks for volunteers from her crew to face Scylla. She also has a nice moment with Walker Scobell when Clarisse and Percy sorta kinda finds some common ground between them.
I also wanna give props to the show for the whole Scylla sequence, because I legitimately felt anxious as the characters were going through it. And then when Clarisse changes her mind and they go up against Charybdis? I know this show had a budget, but probably not a movie budget, so they really did well with however much they had, especially when the plan goes awry and it looks like they all might just die. This is definitely an upgrade from the first season.
