Oh my goodness, it’s been a busy week and I have not been able to get my affairs in order, but at least I’ve got RuPaul’s Drag Race, I guess?
With the first episode done and no one sent home, the queens return to the Werk Room with an understandable pep in their step, especially top queens Nini Coco and Vita, as well as safe queens Kenya and Mandy. But of course there is also shade, because these are, after all, drag queens.
It starts with Mia asking Nini how she feels about winning especially after most of the girls counted her out, and the editing is hilarious showing Jane, Discord, and Briar’s faces. At least Jane doesn’t keep things to the confessionals and straight up tells Nini that America is still going to see Nini’s exposed bra straps.
I do feel like Mandy is going to be the Porkchop of the season after the said that performance is her strongest suit and the challenge this episode is going to be girl groups. The foreshadowing is foreshadowing!
Nini and Vita get to pick the groups since they were the top queens in the previous episode, and the team distribution ends up being Nini, Mia, Ciara Myst, Myki Meeks, and Kenya; Vita, Briar, Juicy Love Dion, Discord and Jane Don’t; and Athena, Mandy, Darlene, and DD. Mandy’s chances aren’t looking good! That this is also a definite elimination episode? Mandy, you in danger girl.
The queens have to pick which of the three songs on offer that they like, and of course there is drama. Drag Race España showed us that! It’s even juicier that everyone wants disco, because at least in the Drag Race España episode one team was smart enough to pick the one that people seemed like they wouldn’t pick.
DD Fuego tries to undermine Vita’s group by pointing out that Discord prefers punk, while Nini’s group tries to pick the pop song but DD wants everyone to decide on who gets disco first. It gets a little heated between Athena and Vita, and Discord has to step in and say that she can help make sure that their group turns it up with the punk song. Now Athena’s group getting the disco song? The team that wanted the “Hater” song in Drag Race España ended up in the bottom, so I guess I should start saying goodbye to Mandy at this point.
Over at Nini’s group, Nini is having trouble with her voice due to the last episode’s screaming challenge. Meanwhile, the other queens point out that it doesn’t look like Athena wants to be in her group at all, and just from the visuals, they’re kinda right.
When it comes to the choreography, it’s Discord that really stands out in all the wrong ways, but see, with the punk songs on Drag Race, I’ve always felt that the choreo doesn’t need to be as smooth? It’s punk! Athena’s group is also experiencing some friction, although it’s not so much from a lacking dancer, but because of Athena and DD’s personalities clashing. Nini’s group is the only one that looked okay!
As for the recording of the actual song, Athena’s group is once again the ~star~ because two of them — Darlene and DD — are pitchy, according to Michelle. Mandy isn’t even mentioned, which just convinces me even more that she’s going home because they’re not even crafting a storyline for her. Nini can’t sing because of her throat troubles, but that’s at least something the story editors can build on for a Rudemption or something. Mandy’s just nowhere. I’m sorry I’m so negative about Mandy but there’s only been a few Asian queens to really stand out in the mothership Drag Race. I’ve been conditioned to expect the worse for the Asian queens!
Since there’s still a lot of queens, there isn’t one single topic they focus on in the lead up to the performance. We hear a little bit about DD growing up in Mexico, Discord’s opinions on drag being Disneyfied, and Athena being ~plucked~ at Nini and Vita not picking her.
On the runway, the theme is going to be Your Neck, Your Back, Your Pussy, and Your Crack and I am SCREAMING.
Athena’s group is up first and…well. It felt a little disorganized? Bye Mandy, I guess. Also, I can’t help but think of Trixie and Katya listening to that TikTok describing every song on Drag Race.
Of the three groups, it’s Vita’s punk group that really stood out, and if Jane isn’t in the top again this week I will be very surprised. As for the runway, I really liked Athena’s, Mia’s, Nini’s, and Juicy’s.
Athena, Darlene, Mandy, and DD are up for elimination and well, again, bye Mandy. Hardly knew ye. Mia and Jane are the top queens, and I’m thinking that this is going to go to Jane.
During the critiques, I really think it’s going to be Mandy and DD in the bottom, with Darlene and Athena safe. I do look forward to a little friction backstage once they’re sent there because DD just said Athena was behind the choreo after the judges said the choreo didn’t really work.
Jane wins this episode, and Mandy and DD are in the bottom, and I’m already saying my goodbyes to Mandy. AND YOU KNOW WHAT. Mandy proved me wrong! When she started lip syncing to the rap(?) part of the song? TS was living her life!
If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
