Ron Watches Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 6

It’s been literal months since I watched an episode of the show, and in my defence, January was a tough month for me, and I’ve been playing catch-up ever since. But I’m back here again and ready to watch!

We saw Percy and Annabeth make it past the Sirens and Circe in the previous episode, and at the start of this episode, we get to see what happens to Tyson, since we know where Percy, Annabeth, and Clarisse are. So what happens to Tyson?

Judging from the first few minutes, pretty mid special effects. I’m sorry! Previous underwater scenes weren’t this long, so I really didn’t get to notice the special effects. A necklace then falls into his hand, and then we get…a flashback? We get something involving Percy looking at multiple dead campers. That turns out to be a dream, so we don’t really know how Tyson gets rescued from the Sea of Monsters.

Percy shares this dream with Annabeth, a dream wherein Thalia kills the kids from Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth tries to rationalize this demigod dream, but Percy seems pretty shaken up by it and pretty much convinced that Thalia is going to be trouble if she ever returns.

In Polyphemus’ cave, Grover finds out that Pan was there, and was in fact the one who left the Golden Fleece. Polyphemus has been using the Golden Fleece to lure satyrs there and to learn more about the world outside his island. We also learn why Clarisse and Grover haven’t been eaten yet — they’re being used as bait so Polyphemus can get rid of all these questing demigods in one swoop.

Percy and Annabeth are already on the island, and taking what they learned from The Odyssey, they take wool from Polyphemus’ sheep to disguise themselves. Or at least, that was the plan. As Annabeth is taking the wool, she gets a message from Luke, who warns them about Polyphemus and is kinda trying to get on Annabeth’s good side. Of course, Percy isn’t having any of that, and interrupts the message so that the plan can go on as…uhm…planned.

The sheep subterfuge works out for the most part, and I gotta commend the production because it was thrilling, especially since I expected Polyphemus to spring out at any moment. Percy and Annabeth find out that Clarisse is still alive, which puts a crimp in their plans because they only expected to rescue Grover. But they’ve got bigger things to worry about because Polyphemus’ trap is finally revealed. The Golden Fleece on display is a fake, and in the ensuing chaos, Annabeth escapes, but Percy is now trapped in the cave with Grover and Clarisse.

But there may be hope yet, as Annabeth makes full use of her invisibility to get Polyphemus riled up. I don’t know how that’s going to help, though? Maybe it’ll distract Polyphemus enough for them to escape? But now they also have to contend with Luke, who’s arrived on Polyphemus’ island to get the Golden Fleece. Then again, maybe I should have waited, because the show tells us why Annabeth’s doing what she’s doing. She’s drawing away Polyphemus so that Percy and the gang can find the real Golden Fleece, which they do, thanks to Grover’s nose.

Unfortunately, finding the Golden Fleece doesn’t mean they get out of the cave. Polyphemus arrives before they can even open it, and in an attempt to distract him, Annabeth slices at his ankle, which just ends with her getting swatted and possibly grievously wounded. She’s bloodied and not moving, after all. But just when all hope seems lost, here comes Tyson! Tyson and Polyphemus fight, and since I haven’t read the book and barely remember the second movie, I’m a little but shocked that Tyson falls off the cliff with Polyphemus. That obstacle’s taken care off, but at what cost?

With Polyphemus gone, attention’s now back to Annabeth, who is dying. At least that’s what Luke says. The Golden Fleece is the obvious solution, but Clarisse isn’t about to give it to Luke. However, Percy isn’t going to let Annabeth die, and snatches the Golden Fleece from Clarisse while she’s distracted. To Luke’s credit, he does use it on Annabeth, but now he’s left Percy, Grover, and Clarisse in Polyphemus’ cave.

But then it’s Tyson once again to the rescue! He’s survived the fall with Polyphemus and has rolled back the rock blocking the cave, but to do so, he had to let Luke escape with Annabeth. But! Man, that’s a lot of buts. But! Tyson comes through for the gang once again. We find out that the charm he got was to summon hippocampi, which I did not know were actually mythological creatures! I thought it was just a part of the brain! They’re going to use the hippocampi to chase after Luke and get back the Golden Fleece.
