Ron Watches I Am Not Big Bird

I swear this is (hopefully) the last time I mention the hell week I went through last…uhm…week, since it’s been resolved thanks to the generous, generous help of the people around me. I just needed a break from my place and my brain for a bit so I went out to watch a movie, and I Am Not Big Bird was at the right time and with fewer people in line for it.

I Am Not Big Bird is about timid bank employee Luis Carpio who finds himself unmoored after his girlfriend turns down his engagement. It’s not so much that he’s got a small dick, it’s because he’s let that small dick have too much undue influence on his love life.

In order to become a “bigger man” and to put his girlfriend out of his mind Luis invites his friends Macky and July to Thailand. The objective is to get laid, but what ends up happening instead is crazy hijinks brought about by the fact that Luis is a doppelgänger for porn star Big Bird, named as such because of his…big bird.

While I knew that the film was going to be a sex comedy, I have to admit that I was still surprised that it actually delivered on the sex part of sex comedy. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word “kantutan” in a Filipino movie used in an intentionally humorous context, as it always seems to be used in ~serious~ dramas or used in unintentionally funny ways. There’s no shortage of dick jokes, and Big Bird’s big bird is ridiculously big and used in ridiculous situations that felt refreshing to me, especially since what I remember as big comedy hits in the past few years have been along the Vice Ganda vein of comedy.

It may be a dated reference, but I Am Big Bird actually reminded me of Jeffrey Jeturian’s Bridal Shower, but aimed at the straight male crowd rather than the women and queer community that was Bridal Shower‘s audience. Sorta related? Unrelated? It’s a crime that I can’t find even Bridal Shower‘s trailer on YouTube.

I was definitely entertained by I Am Big Bird and once it finds its way to a streaming service I’m definitely going to give it a rewatch. Now was it worth the money I spent to watch in theaters? I don’t know yet! I kinda vacillate between thinking it was worth it to thinking maybe I should have just waited for it on a streaming service. One thing that does make me feel good about spending money to watch this movie is that if this is a success, it may lead to more films like this getting made. If that’s something important to you, then maybe it wouldn’t be too bad if you opened your wallet to watch this in the movie theaters.
