Ron Watches What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (PH) Episodes 12 and 13

Got to say, this Philippine adaptation of What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim is definitely stirring the same emotions that the Korean original did in me. Like the Korean original, I am beginning to enjoy the kilig moments between Kim and Paulo. And just like the Korean original, I really do not care for the older brother/Cyrus plot.

Let’s see if that’s still going to hold true in the coming episodes!

At the end of the previous episode, BMC asks Kim out on a dinner date and just like I said in the previous post, I am legitimately kilig. BMC says it’s because he has something important to say to Kim and I am no rookie I know there’s still going to be roadblocks because last time I looked this series was well into 20 episodes already but there’s still that part of me that went YIEEEEEE. They even do the whole putting a band-aid on your wound thing and I’m a sucker for that.

But alas, with every good there is bad and that bad is the Cedric storyline. I don’t want people to think I have it out for Jake Cuenca or something. I also hated this storyline in the Korean original. But you all probably know that already because I’ve said it in every single post involving this storyline.

I actually prefer the Roni storyline with the new Secretary Kim over the brother storyline. And boy do I feel younger because I know what ISTG means and didn’t need the little caption they had at the corner of the screen. But I support having this in Filipino shows rather than have the characters awkwardly explain it in the dialogue. Heck, I even prefer the patently ridiculous meet-cute between Sarah and Baldo!

Meanwhile, Kim’s ate is feeling the same kilig as the viewers of this show because she’s already shipping the two of them and pushing Kim to admit that she actually does find BMC attractive. Further into the episode we get the romantic comedy hijinks as Kim mistakenly dials BMC while she’s trying out clothes and she almost inadvertently strips in front of him.

And then we get the whole She’s All That female lead in a dress scene and my goodness did I just age myself by using that as a reference? But anyway, while I would prefer him to be a little looser, Paolo Avelino shows that he can do a romantic comedy after all.

The date, as per K-drama tradition, involves a snag and that snag is in the shape of Cyrus the older brother. Oh brother. And I have to call out the production on this one because how can Secretary Kim not know how Cyrus sounds they’ve met multiple times already?

So, Brandon and Cyrus are engaged in this argument right? In this argument that has vast amounts of family drama underlining it? But my jologs brain can’t help but hear the fucking convo accents Jake Cuenca and Paolo Avelino have and I can’t take them seriously? It’s like watching two fuckbois arguing at BGC.

Unfortunately, Brandon’s anger spills on over to Secretary Kim and Secretary Kim, good on her, tells him nope, cool down, this is not what I signed up for and I’m resigning anyway. She also tells Cyrus off, saying you rich fucks only think about yourselves what about the people around you? Power to the proletariat!

While Secretary Kim walks away from that clusterfuck we get a flashback scene where we see Janice De Belen wigged at the gig. Honey. Sweetie. Darling. That is a wig. And not a good wig! It could fall off at any moment like Trixie’s wig and Trixie’s wig is a good one!

After the disastrous date, the people around Brandon and Kim both goad them into standing firm and not apologizing for what happened and I have to be on the side of Kim’s sisters here because she literally did nothing wrong. Let the rich bastard apologize!

This episode, unfortunately, brings to the forefront one of the weaknesses of chopping up this drama into 20-minute bites. There’s really not much that happens other than setting up events further down the line. And there’s also more focus on That Plot in this episode and you all know by now that just makes me tune out.

One positive development that does happen is that Kim stands up for herself and tells BMC that she’s not some plaything that he can fuck around with. Man up and make a stand on something so Secretary Kim doesn’t have a hard time doing her job!
