Ron Watches Drag Race Mexico Season 2 Episode 3

I had a long night yesterday — will blog about it even though no one asked! — so I am only getting to Drag Race Mexico today.

Let’s go!

Of course, Unique is happy that she managed to survive the lip sync in the previous episode. I also found it funny how Garçonne still found the energy to read Nina de la Fuente after her departure even after he was crying about her it in the previous episode.

The next day Taiga and Lolita enter and apparently the mini challenge has something to do with UFOs? Specifically, that batshit alien thing that they showed at the Mexican parliament that was on the news I think months ago!

Honey that’s a sugar cookie or something.

Anyways, they’re going to drag up their own mummified alien corpse and I am already laughing at the idea. And at least we know this is going to amount to something unlike the mini challenges in Drag Race France! Sorry, that’s one thing I really dislike about Drag Race France.

The aliens didn’t turn out as draggy as I thought they would BUT TO BE FAIR it’s not like you could do a lot to them with regards to makeup and clothing since they’re basically stick figures. Little Poundcake they were not.

Okay the mini challenge started out a little funny to me but then it went on for too long? Jenary Bloom looked great though, she really went full drag alien unlike some of the other girls. Leexa Fox I am looking at you. I also liked Garçonne’s look but it read more horror to me rather than extraterrestrial?

Lolita Banana and Taiga Brava announce Eva Blunt and Unique as the mini challenge winners and…maybe Eva’s look had more impact in person? I dunno I really thought it was too pretty to be exraterrestrial? But then again who says extraterrestrial can’t be pretty.

The queens are then told that today is the ball episode and that the theme is traditional Mexican fair, with the three categories being fair foods, fair games, and fair prizes. As the queens prepare for the ball, conversation shifts to Eva Blunt’s marriage and then awkwardly shifts to the marriage problems Maria Bonita had with her own relationship.

Again, I don’t want to make it seem like emotional conversations in other Drag Race franchises aren’t prodded by producers. I know they are. It’s just that the other franchises seem to be better at giving it the sheen of being organic as opposed to the way Drag Race Mexico does it? The editing is just too abrupt and it shows in how the shifts in conversation topics sound so obviously orchestrated. And it’s such a disservice to the queens because Maria’s story is moving! Did they change editors in between seasons because I don’t remember the first season being like this.

The runway show begins and it looks like everybody looks like tornado potatoes because three of the queens have it as their first outfit. I mean at least thy don’t look the same? There are also two popcorn-inspired outfits as well. It’s just a tiny bit kimono-gate but not a full-blown one.

The second time around on the runway wearing fair games-inspired outfits, it’s Eva Blunt that stands out for me not so much because the outfit was good but because she just sold it with all the eating of the “occupants”. Michelle Visage even made an appearance! But again, just like the previous category, there’s a bit of repetition here with the catterpillar and the canoe ride. It’s unfortunate!

Even the final category saw some repeats and these were all stuff the queens brought with them to the competition. They didn’t have to make something on the day itself. This is really unfortunate.

The judges critiques bring up the repetitive outfits, but only to the top and bottom queens. The critiques are not so much reprimands the queens for the lack of imagination but more of “If you’re going to have the same outfit you better make sure it’s the better looking one.” And it’s a valid critique!

Leexa Fox wins this week’s Maxi Challenge and Evan Blunt is plucked. She gave great Jan face, to her credit!

The bottom two girls are Luna and Maria Bonita, and since Maria had her whole dramatic moment in the Werk Room earlier in the episode, I think this is where she gets sent packing.

And I’m right! To be fair, Maria didn’t have a chance after Luna’s multiple reveals, from another outfit to a wig reveal. She really wasn’t surviving that battle.
