I know this is a day late but work has not been letting up and I haven’t been able to squeeze in a blog post. But I’m trying to catch up now!
The previous episode felt like a breathere in a good way, so I’m expecting this new one to move the plot forward. And you know what I found out when I opened Disney+? They aired two fucking episodes the last time. So I’m behind by two episode. Motherfucker.
ANYWAY. The first thing we see in this new to me episode is another BB Urich report, which focuses on graffiti artists and how they struggle with the bad reputation they have in the city when there are actual murderers in the city that people should be more concerned about. And we get a tease of yet another vigilante? I don’t know enough Marvel lore to know who that is!
Then we find out why BB was interviewing graffiti artists — there’s one making huge political statements with it and probably killing people to do it too. I’m guessing it was the guy from episode four.
From there, we see Matt praying and it is a testament to how long I’ve been away from the church because I do not recognize that prayer at all. It’s keeping him grounded, either way, which is more than one can say for Fisk who is going to be doing all the schmaltzing you expect from politicians. Are we going to get singing Latvians again? But before Fisk can do that he has to deal with one of the gang bosses who is chafing from the $1.8 million “reimbursement” that Vanessa demanded and is refusing to pay it.
Over at Matt’s home, his girlfriend is unwittingly psychoanalyzing him and Matt is trying to act all nonchalant about it even as his girlfriend tries to convince him to be a resource for the book she plans to write about vigilantes. She wants a meeting with Frank Castle and don’t we all.
Back at City Hall, we get confirmation that the mural is indeed made from human blood, while over at Matt’s office he gets visited by Hector Ayala’s niece, who tells him that her uncle was investigating a series of disappearances. I’m not very smart but even I can figure out that those people who have disappeared are probably now a Kingpin mural. And Hector’s niece knows just the right words to stab at Matt’s very guilty Catholic conscience.
Over at City Hall, they’re also talking about this serial killer. And he’s definitely one because he’s already killed 60 people and possibly more once the police gather more evidence. Here’s where Fisk shows why the people voted for him — his experience with the criminal element allows him to think of a different approach when it comes to the killer. A killer who the general populace knows already because two girls accost him and ask for a photo!
Aside from that serial killer — Muse — Fisk also has to deal with the city’s elite, which he really isn’t a part of because as wealthy as he is, he isn’t from them. At least I remember that much from the Netflix Daredevil series. And boy do these rich people make him feel like it. They’re not cowed by his political power or his financial power. Of course, they’re not opposing him because of any goodwill for the people — when have the rich ever looked out for the poor? — but for their own interests as well. Add a little bit of snobbishness to that too.
Over at Matt’s office, Cherry finally updates him about Muse and how he possibly has upwards of 60 victims and Matt’s Catholic conscience is definitely feeling the guilt. Cherry tells him to let this go but this might just be the thing that pushes Matt to put on the Daredevil costume on again.
Fisk, on the other hand, is going to use Muse as a way to wrap his hands around the city’s figurative neck. He creates a task force with all the Punisher wannabees from the police force and allows them to operate without body cameras and wouldn’t you know it they’re know the Philippines circa 2016 to 2022.
While all of that is happening, Hector Ayala’s niece is putting herself in harm’s way as she goes to investigate Muse’s suspected hideout herself. A hideout, by the way, the features the Punisher logo. Is she even at the right location or has she stumbled onto Frank Castle instead of Muse?
Her investigating on her own, however, gets Hector’s widow worried and she calls Matt for help and Matt finally cracks and rather than having the authorities handle this, he puts on the Daredevil suit once more and rescue her himself. Which probably isn’t a good idea considering one of the cops you beat up has now been given express permission by Fisk to use excessive force.
And Fisk is also giving Adam permission to use excessive force, handing him an axe to try and kill him. We then get two parallel fight scenes between Daredevil and Muse and Fisk and Adam and I gotta say it really got me excited! The episode’s been building up these moments and the catharsis feels great.
