Ron Watches Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 Episode 1

Starting a new to me show! I haven’t read the books, but I am familiar with the movies made from them. I won’t comment on the quality of those films because it’s been years, other than to state that Logan Lerman? Hottie. Now let’s get into this show!

Right from the get-go, this is already a different beast compared to the movie, which I barely remember anyway. Not that Logan Lerman looked old for the part at the time, but Walker Scobell definitely looks 12. Whether he still looks 12 today, however, is a different thing entirely.

Also, maybe it’s just because it’s been more than a decade since I saw it last, but it actually feels like Percy is in danger in this show compared to the film? I really liked that whole Mrs. Dodds transformation thing, and the way she pounced on Percy in search of…something that Percy doesn’t know just yet.

I also do not remember this bit about Grover selling out Percy to the school administrator in the movie, and I’m assuming this is a book thing because I know this series has been praised for how faithful it’s been to the book. Of course, Grover telling the school administrator Percy pushed another student into the fountain results in his expulsion, and it’s not a fun time for everyone.

His expulsion, and his admission to his mother that things have been happening to him, does result in his mother talking him to Montauk, which I thought would be where the half-blood camp would be, but I thought wrong. It looks like a beach house, and it’s where Percy’s mom comes clean about her side of the story. And it’s a lot to dump on a 12-year-old! Hello, your mom slept with a god and now monsters from mythology are out to get you! Oh, also, those myths are real!

And I love that the Minotaur is wearing underpants, and how those Mythomagic cards that Grover showed earlier in the episode were actually training, and that Grover is actually older than Percy? I also remember this encounter with the Minotaur, and how Percy’s mom sacrifices herself, but I can’t remember if this was an actual death, or a temporary one that’s going to be undone by the end of the season.

The episode ends with Percy defeating the Minotaur and getting into the camp. All in all, an interesting enough first episode for someone like me who’s only knowledge of the series is from the movie. Looking forward to finishing this first season before the new season starts in December!

If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!

  1. […] why Clarisse doesn’t like Percy? Is this all stemming from Percy killing that Minotaur from episode one? I hope they get to explore her character more this season. ANYWAYS, she’s snarky about why […]
