This was supposed to go up yesterday, but I was just too tired from work and couldn’t watch it as I was too sleepy. But we’re here now!
In the season one finale, we saw that while Percy was able to return the master bolt to Zeus, it still hasn’t stopped Kronos from contacting him in his dreams. Kronos is obviously going to still be an issue this season, but I’m interested in seeing how he makes himself an issue.
Seeing as this season is based on The Sea of Monsters, it’s absolutely fitting that the first shot is that of the sea, one that looks like it’s going to be turbulent pretty soon. We then see Grover, and it’s pretty obvious that it’s been years since they shot the first one because Grover is grown. He’s on his search for Pan mission, and it’s not looking good because he’s just found another dead satyr.
He’s then accosted by Allison Sims, a character I do not know since I haven’t read the books, and she’s supposed to be a camper but is no longer one. And that is because she’s part of Luke’s rebellion! Grover makes his escape using the pan flute he’s found on the dead satyr’s body, and can I say that from these few minutes, the show’s addressing my nitpick about how the previous season could have been grander? Because Grover escaps Allison and runs right into a…Kraken, I’m assuming. It definitely isn’t the Watcher in the Water.
From there, we get to see where Percy is now, and just like Grover, he’s grown. The voice has also gotten noticeably deeper, and he’s still talking about the dreams he’s been having. Also, phones attract monsters in this universe. Good way to get mobile phones out of the equation!
It’s not just Percy and his mom now, because they’re now living with a cyclops named Tyson. His mom met Tyson at a homeless shelter and now she’s enrolled him in Percy’s school, and Tyson is clinging to Percy since he’s the only kid he knows. Also, I’m sorry, but Walker Scobell’s new deep voice is distracting. My brain is still stuck on his season one voice, and it doesn’t help that I just finished watching that season last week.
Camp’s about to start for Percy, and it looks like his mom is going to make him bring Tyson along because just like Percy, she’s also had a dream. Poseidon and Kronos being two sides of the same coin? I’ve grown stupid in my old age, apologies.
I am kinda curious what humans see when they look at Tyson, but since we’re seeing this from Percy’s eyes, we only see Tyson as a cyclops. Percy’s trying his best not to call him a monster, which is valiant, but he is, though. We then get to see Annabeth, who has also grown. Damn. And Tyson lets slip that Percy’s been spending his time out of camp thinking about Annabeth. Are we getting romance this season? If we are, that’ll maybe have to wait because Annabeth has also had a dream, one about camp.
They haven’t been to camp yet, but when Annabeth contacted camp, there was somebody else other than Chiron on the other end. They’re in a cab driven by The Grey Sisters, who I remember from Clash of the Titans. The Harry Hamlin one! Except they were called The Stygian Witches back then.
As it turns out, The Grey Sisters are not girl’s girls, because they tease Annabeth about Percy and reveal that she’s been dreaming about him. AND SHE’S ALSO BEEN DREAMING ABOUT ANOTHER GUY. A TALL ONE. I’m guessing the other guy is Luke, but he better be still taller than Percy because Walker Scobell shot up. I also like that they reference the myth of Perseus when Percy holds The Grey Sisters’ eye hostage.
Okay, can I just say, Walker Scobell and Leah Jeffries have really upgraded from the first season? Their conversation about the letters they’ve been sending each other, and how both of them are keeping stuff out? The chemistry? Are we going to get pining and yearning for this season?
That pining and yearning is cut short when fireballs began shooting towards them and they have to run for their lives. At one point, it looks like Percy’s going to be decimated by one such fireball, but Tyson steps in and we find out that cyclopes are immune to fire in this universe.
Unfortunately for Tyson, his immunity to fire doesn’t allow him to enter camp, but Annabeth vouches for him, or at least that’s what I think she did. Another monster manages to get in because of what Annabeth did, but Clarisse and other campers manage to get rid of it.
Is it ever explained in the books why Clarisse doesn’t like Percy? Is this all stemming from Percy killing that Minotaur from episode one? I hope they get to explore her character more this season. ANYWAYS, she’s snarky about why Annabeth and the two boys are at the back of the camp, but Annabeth quickly figures out that this was a distraction and the real attack was elsewhere. Elsewhere being Thalia’s tree, which Luke has poisoned. Luke hasn’t grown, but only because he was already grown in season one.
We then find out that the guy Annabeth saw instead of Chiron is Tantalus, and Tantalus is understandably always in a bad mood if you know your Greek mythology. He wants Tyson killed, but Poseidon claims him as his son, so now Percy has a brother he literally never knew.
Dionysus is have a laugh at the whole situation, but soon enough we get the lay of the land. Chiron has been booted because he’s a son of Kronos and Tantalus put in his place. And the combination of Tantalus and Dionysus isn’t exactly the best, frankly speaking. They don’t take Percy and Annabeth’s claims seriously, and maybe it’s because I just finished watching the first season last week, but it’s kinda irritating and repetitive? But maybe I only feel that way because everything’s still so fresh and it wouldn’t be so irritating if its been years in between viewings.
Annabeth and Percy also try to reconnect after being separated from each other before returning to camp, but instead end up digging up resentments they have about each other. The break between filming has definitely been a good one because Walker and Leah are bouncing off of each other’s energy so well. Not that they didn’t in the first season, but what they’re doing now is better. And I’m sorry to Tyson because this new energy between Annabeth and Percy is overtaking your sad story in my mind. Don’t worry, I saw the wounds on your back, I know you’ve been through a lot.
Later that night, Percy has a dream about Grover again, and it’s revealed that it’s an emphatic link between the two of them. Grover reveals that he’s being held by Polyphemus, the cyclops that Odysseus blinded in The Odyssey, so does that mean that he’s still blind now? It looks like he’s in possession of the Golden Fleece, which if I’m remembering correctly is from the story of Jason and the Argonauts. Now it becomes clear what they need to do: retrieve the Golden Fleece to heal Thalia’s tree.
If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
