Still catching up! Hopefully, by the time the new episode comes around, I won’t be so swamped.
We saw Mandy Mango sashay away in the previous episode, because they really wanted her to go home already. Mia Starr doesn’t think it was the right decision to make because she thinks that Mandy’s a better performer than Briar, and judging from last week’s lip sync, Mia would be correct. Juicy, meanwhile, is being extremely gracious in victory, acknowledging all the help she’s gotten, especially from Myki.
But enough about queens getting along, let’s see Briar and Mia fight over something that wasn’t shown in the previous episode! Apparently, Mia touched a nerve when she asked Briar about her past relationship, which ends up with Briar’s business being brought out into the open. I mean, what did she expect, there are three queens in the same drag family in there! Briar’s also a bit abrasive, at least from what we’ve been shown on the show. And lemme just say, I love it. I love mess as long as it’s not happening to me!
The next day, the queens are told by Ru to pair up with their ~best friend~ and we end up with the pairings of Juicy-Briar, Discord-Jane, Myki-Nini, Ciara- Kenya, Mia-Vita, and Darlene-Athena. This week’s Maxi Challenge is a design challenge, where they’re told to make a mash-up of a red carpet outfit. BUT the twist is that the pairs are going to be judged against each other.
After getting their materials, the queens have different problems with the things they got, but it’s Kenya Pleaser that deals with it in the funniest way because she got Gaga’s meat dress. There’s also a Joella mention from Vita, I think, and who would have thought that this would be where Joella would end up.
Briar also gets a moment where she opens up about how the competition is getting to her, and while Juicy vouches for her and says she isn’t abrasive, the show really hasn’t shown that non-abrasive side of her. This is still a television show and it is still a visual medium, so it would have been nice to show that non-abrasive side of her rather than just telling the audience about it and expecting them to just go along with it.
I also enjoyed the discussion between Kenya, Mia, and Vita, especially Mia’s quip about knowing that Vita’s going to beat her. It’s funny! They also point out that the top two queens are probably going to be Discord and Jane, and one of those is going to get the face crack moment in this episode.
Athena is also going through a lot, and to me it looks mostly self-inflicted. She’s so intent on doubting herself that even Darlene is telling her to trust her own talent. And I personally think Athena’s looks have been better than Darlene so far! Athena’s worst enemy is Athena.
Elsewhere in the Werk Room, Mia and Briar get to know each other a little more, and so does the audience. Both had not great relationships with their family or members of their family and it’s affected them going into the competition. Mia’s entrance outfit was made from her dead brother’s jeans!
Kenya’s life is equally dramatic. She was born in her mom’s college dorm bathroom! It’s an episode of 9-1-1!
Juicy and Briar are up first and…I think Juicy won this? I am not a fashion person at all though, so this is all just vibes. As for the Discord and Jane match-up, I think Discord won that one. Nini won her confrontation with Myki, while Ciara is going to win her match-up with Kenya. I think Vita wore it better than Mia, but to be fair, it’s not like Mia was dog walked. Her outfit looked nice as well. Finally, it’s Darlene who I think will win that match-up with Athena. I thought Athena’s gown was boring and that the cape was the only interesting thing about it, but then we do have to consider that Athena made so many outfits only to end up with the first design she thought of.
The critiques start and I love the sniping between Law and Michelle, but that is immediately topped by Briar fainting. And as a Filipino, I just have to say Airtime?
And in this episode, it’s Mia and Vita playing the role of Turing because they do not believe that Briar actually fainted. I haven’t followed it closely online, but apparently it turns out that Briar had pneumonia during the shoot for this?
Whatever the case, it’s Juicy who wins between the two of them. Jane wins between her and Discord, and I think Discord lost this one because her garment was pulling down. I didn’t notice until Michelle pointed it out! Nini wins her match-up, while Ciara wins over Kenya. Vita wins her match-up, while Athena wins her. Huh, shows what I know about fashion because I thought Darlene would win that match-up.
So, the queens come back after deliberation, and Vita wins this week’s challenge. Landing in the bottom is Briar and Kenya, along with a joke about the word squabble because Briar did not use it correctly. Kenya is just killing it in the confessionals, but will she also kill it in the lip sync? She does! And Briar sashays away.
