Ron Watches Drag Race España Season 6 Episode 1

Work has been so busy for me that I missed the premiere of this new season. It’s basically been the story of my life these past few weeks, as I’ve missed multiple episodes of multiple shows and even dropped some of them because I was too far behind. But I’m not that far behind on this one!

The episode opens with a brand-new Werk Room, and it looks so good and big. They’ve really given the show money. And the first queen to enter this brand-new Werk Room is Coco Luna, who treats us to a mouthful of an intro. Brevity is the soul of wit, people!

Alma DeSoul is up next, and she also has a lengthy intro, but I get what she’s trying to do with it. She says she’s a polished and well-trained dancer, which is really just setting up expectations that she might not meet. But let’s wait and see what she does.

The third queen to enter the Werk Room is Kim Miller, and she’s got a breastplate. A bouncy breastplate. She looks great in it, though, and she’s beautiful in her leather dominatrix outfit. She’s young, though, and young queens aren’t always rewarded on Drag Race Spain, and I mean this in a good way.

Buba Anorex is the fourth queen to enter the Werk Room, and she’s also positioning herself as a dancing queen. Let’s see which one goes home first, Alma DeSoul or her. She’s Chanel Anorex’s drag daughter, and I’ll be honest, I couldn’t even remember who Chanel Anorex is. Turns out Kelly Roller sent her home in the third episode of the third season of Drag Race España.

Sorny is the next queen to enter, and her branding is shit. As in, she’s wearing a shit outfit. An outfit with attachments that are meant to look like shit. There were even bits and pieces of it falling off as she walked into the Werk Room. She is apparently already well known in the Madrid nightlife scene, and Kim wants to know if she’s afraid that getting on the show while already being well known might backfire on her. Kim also thinks Sorny doesn’t make the most polished work, so there might be a storyline there further down the line.

The sixth queen to enter the Werk Room is Vanessa Artilles, who declares that the curse of the Canary Island queens is going to end with her. Let’s see! I mean, Drag Sethlas did go on to win Drag Race España All Stars, so maybe the curse has already been lifted. Also, I can’t with the discussion about her teeth. What did Alma DeSoul mean when she said Vanessa’s teeth is like a stationery store?

Up next is Maitetxu Mia, who is the first Basque queen to compete on the show. Unfortunately, all I know about the Basque region I got from perusing the Wikipedia page on Miguel Ángel Blanco when I was looking for a documentary to watch on Netflix. He was kidnapped by the ETA and so I clicked on that, and that was hours of my afternoon gone.

Alex Marteen is the next queen to enter, and she’s got hairy legs. She is the second queen that Vanessa has made a face at, and I can’t help it. I kinda love Vanessa for it.

Following Alex Marteen into the Werk Room is Joan Chevalier, and I can already see Vanessa eyeing her up and down. She’s all in pink, and she’s here to make friends! This is Supremme’s Best Friend Race!

Up next is Liak, who I thought would be from the Canary Islands because of the platform shoes. He says he’s the first Cayetano to join the show, and I can’t help but shudder because “Cayetano” isn’t a good thing where I’m from.

Liak is followed by Liz Dust, who is apparently a legend in the scene. Unfortunately, she is immediately eclipsed by the entrance of Marcus Massalami, who is the first drag king to compete in Drag Race España. I wonder how he’s going to shake things up! The reveal that he’s also deaf and wearing hearing aids on top of being the first drag king on the show is already a big deal. And apparently she was the first to put Sorny on stage?

Supremme arrives and tells them there’s going to be a twist involving a coin this season. She also tells them that the first mini challenge is a photoshoot where water gets dripped onto them. I say dripped because that hardly affects their faces. A dribble! A soft, little piss dribble. Or at least, the water wasn’t shooting that hard with Joan, who went first. It got stronger further down the line!

Buba Anorex wins the first mini challenge and receives €500. I was expecting that she’ll get another advantage, but what we get is Supremme explaining the twist for this season. Once the three bottom queens are named, she’ll flip a coin. Heads, the queens vote for the one they want to save from the lip sync. Tails, the queens vote for who they want to lip sync. And they’re doing it face to face.

It’s stressful, but the queens discussing it afterwards, especially when they didn’t actually get it? Hilarious. Also, Coco Luna checking out Liak, who is definitely trade of the season? Also hilarious.

The next day, Coco Luna is really picking on Joan, who I have to admit really does not have the best make-up skills. But I don’t think Coco is close enough to Joan to be reading her like this. The queens also discuss whether they’re going to be strategic or not when it comes to the coin twist, but just like Liak points out, you never know until you’re face to face with it.

As the queens are preparing for the talent show, Alma DeSoul opens up about her doing blackface for one performance and how she had to learn from that mistake. It gets brought up because, as she’s talking about how she can do many different kinds of dance, like a Bollywood or oriental dance, Maitetxu jokes that Alma’s planning to appropriate cultures. The queens say that people should be allowed to grow from their mistakes and that a past mistake shouldn’t be held over their heads for eternity, and considering that viral Massachusetts lesbian bar story? I’m inclined to agree. There’s also a little snippet of Joan and Coco sort of coming to a truce, but let’s see how long that lasts.

We finally get to see the new main stage and it is spectacular. Money is being spent. The talent show starts with Buba Anorex and she is a great opening act. And again, the money being spent. I’m hoping for this with Drag Race Philippines. Alex Marteen also delivers, and I did not expect this from her. Bravo!

Joan Chevalier does…a skit? And it’s so unhinged that it just bulldozes whatever other thoughts I had about it. Unhinged! But they’re planting the seeds of negative critique in the confessionals by having Buba say that the humor fell flat for her. And you can kinda see in the earlier part of the skit that Supremme was also a little bit…confused.

Alma is up next, and she performs a spectacular flamenco number. I’m not Spanish, nor am I a flamenco dancer, so I don’t know if all the cultural elements were correct, but to an outsider? It looked great. And then it was followed by Vanessa’s magic show, which was also great? No misses so far! And the variety of talents displayed so far? This truly is a variety show. So far, the only two similar acts are Buba and Kim Miller’s, and there’s been enough distance and variety in between that I haven’t tuned out as a viewer.

The next performer on the stage is Marcus, and I thought it wasn’t as good as the other performances. But then again, he’s playing the violin as someone who is hearing-impaired, and I think that deserves some points as well. I just don’t know if it’s enough to save him from the bottom.

The next two performers are Liak and Sorny, and from the confessionals from the queens, it looks like Liak might be in the bottom and Sorny won’t be. Coco also gets a mixed reaction from the queens, so maybe we have two queens who are going to be in the bottom. Liz and Maitetxu are the final two performers, and they also deliver.

The runway show starts, and Vanessa and Liak’s outfits are fabulous. And then we get this camera angle for Alex Marteen that starts from her reflection on the floor before rotating right-side up? Camera work? Actual great camera work? Damn! The rest of the outfits are great as well, and I can’t wait to hear what Ana Locking has to say about some of them.

Liak, Coco, Maitetxiu, Alma, Joan, and Liz are the top and bottom queens this episode, and I already know Liak is going to be one of the people in the bottom. Who will the other two be? Judging from the critiques, it might be Coco and Joan. And judging from how she acted in the Werk Room, Coco might be the one sent to the bottom if that’s the way the coin falls, because the queens are irritated. I don’t know about Marcus because they didn’t show her.

Maitetxiu wins this week’s challenge and wins €2,500, but she now has to be the tiebreaker if the queens’ votes after the coin toss end up being a tie. The coin lands on tails, so now the queens have to pick who they want in the bottom. I seriously think it’s going to be Coco, and I am wrong. Kim Miller is the only one who votes for Coco, and if Coco makes it to the next episode, there is going to be a fight. And there will be a fight because Coco is saved by the judges! It’s Liak versus Joan in the lip sync.

It’s an okay lip sync, and I think Liak won this one, but the judges might disagree. Liak is saved, but so is Joan! According to Supremme, this is the one and only double save of the season, but maybe Joan deserved to go, just saying.

If any of you guys like what I do, feel free to leave me a tip!
