At the end of the previous episode, the Denji got a reply to his smoke signal asking for help. Unfortunately for the hostages, the one who replied to the signals is Asa, who isn’t exactly feeling good about being impersonated by Denji’s Daemon pair, fake!Asa. Let’s see how things turn out!
As expected, the Daemons guarding the Higashi village hostages are just light work for Asa. She puts the hostages inside her Daemons Yin and Yang and then tells fake!Asa that she better come clean to Yuru or else.
Once Asa’s out of Yin and Yang, she, Fuyuki, and Gonzo continue to seize control of the Daemons inside the building where the hostages were kept. Yuru eventually makes it there, but doesn’t go in because why interfere when it looks like things are already under control?
Danji, on the other hand, is emotional about it, because he really did think of Yuru as a friend, I guess? But neither he nor Asa really can’t handle Yuru’s earnest emotions and try to be nonchalant about it. They really are siblings.
Meanwhile, Dera tells Gonzo about Shingo’s location, and when last we left he wasn’t exactly at a disadvantage. Will Asuma still keep up his cover, or will the two of them finally battle it out?
But before we get to see that, we go back to the warehouses, and the poor, exploited security guard finds the dead bodies inside. Yuru, Dera, and Danji have also arrived, and Dera’s given Yuru a heads-up: if Ivan puts Yuru’s life in danger, he won’t hesitate to shoot Ivan, even if it means Yuru loses the only lead he has to find his and Asa’s parents.
Yuru finally helps out Left and Right battling Ivan, and it’s a good action sequence! When things finally get to a stalemate, Ivan tries a little of “get down here and let’s talk”, but with Gonzo already heading to Shingo, Ivan’s only leverage is his knowledge of Yuru and Asa’s parents. And he even gives that up by saying he killed the parents. It startles everyone enough that Ivan almost gets the jump on Left until Danji steps in.
BUT! Dera, all the way from his sniper’s perch, realizes something. The parents would be better as hostages rather than corpses, so maybe Ivan is lying about that. He’s an antagonist, after all, so why shouldn’t he? And it looks like Dera is right, because Ivan’s internal dialogue is telling Yuru to waste his arrows. And can I just say, some excellent animation and voice work with anxious Yuru. That breathing made me tense.
It’s the thought of Asa, and her optimism when it comes to the fate of their parents, that keeps Yuru from losing control. Seeing the odds stacked against him, Ivan uses the sword on himself, starting a magical reaction that I’m sure is going to be explained in further episodes because we’re left with a cliffhanger of Ivan rushing to end Left.
