We had an exciting cliffhanger in the previous episode, as it appears Vision has been hijacked by another synthezoid he connected with after his reboot. Let’s find out who it is!
Now that she’s in Vision’s head, Jocasta — I know the show is calling her Butcherbird, but I don’t care — is showing Vision what her plan is. Do I understand the plan? Only that she’s going after some woman. But before I can get anymore clarity, Edith severs the connection between Vision and Jocasta with an ~exorcism~, and I love the humor here.
The next day, the AIs are regrouping and trying to strategize, and I have to agree with Ultron here when he says “There’s a quote!” to Edith’s “Nobody likes a surprise rear-entry!” Vision shares that Jocasta seems to be focusing on one particular person — the lady on the television who is possibly transhumanist? — and this is the way they’re going to capture Jocasta. My question is, why would they bother when Jocasta’s already said that she’ll leave them be if they leave her be? But it looks like Vision is merely planning to show her care and compassion to ease the pain he felt from her. And I just gotta say, Vision, baby. What are we doing?
Tommy is also asking questions, specifically, who Vision is talking to when he spaces out. He shares the names of the AIs in his head except for Ultron, and that is probably going to bite his vibranium behind sometime in the future. But for now, Tommy thinks Vision is being honest with him, and Vision can’t say no to Tommy even if he really should have.
Meanwhile, Friday has reported back to Vision, and she says that Interpol’s security bots are formidable, leading to Vision and Ultron trying to take on these bots. AND THE FIRST TEST IS CAPTCHA. The argument Vision and Ultron have about what counts as a hydrant in the square? Hilarious.
Elsewhere in Vision’s head, DUM-E and U are full-on talking now and providing exposition for the show. The people Jocasta has been killing are part of a company to actually create a ~stable synthetic consciousness~, and there are three people from the team she hasn’t killed. Jocasta hasn’t killed project co-lead Dr. Jo Carrington because she died of natural causes, but come on. Jo Carrington. JoCar. Jocasta. I don’t think she died of natural causes. They killed her, and then she somehow put her consciousness into the synthezoid, like Edward Elric putting Al’s soul into a suit of armor.
Elsewhere again, Vision and Ultron’s hacking of Interpol files continue, and I gotta say this is much more enjoyable to watch than your usual hacking scenes, and it’s funnier as well. They finally figure out who the next target is, but they need to get into a fancy gala to get to her, which is where con man Tommy comes in.
After getting in touch with Lisa, they get themselves new threads, and Tommy starts a skit with Vision in Italian. I know Ruaridh’s half-Italian, but for some reason I didn’t think he’d still know Italian? Thanks to the distraction they provide, Lisa’s able to steal invitations for them, and they get to enter the fancy dinner.
Back inside Vision’s head, Edith has found out that the AI matrix that Katarina — Jocasta’s new target — sold to Tony Stark is the template for all of them. She’s found the people that were the basis for her and the other AIs, and when she finds out the story of the person she’s based on, Edith has a little bit of a crisis because this is not how she sees herself. And because of that, we get an unexpected compassionate answer from Ultron. This was a nice scene! However, their discussion is cut short by the news from the ~television~ letting us hear what I assume is Katarina basically calling herself and other AI creators gods. The Pope’s already talked about this!
The painting of the burning man from episode two is finally explained here. That was the first synthezoid, J.I.M., who was overwhelmed and unable to process the emotions that he felt as a synthezoid, and he literally felt himself to death. Vision tells all of this to Tommy, but in the process inadvertently reveals that there are five AIs in his head, not just the four he initially mentioned. And since you can’t read the doll con the con man, Tommy figures out that Vision has also been talking to Ultron all along.
It’s at this point that the Butcherbird killer appears at the party, and all my hunches were right! It is Jocasta, and she is based on Dr. Jo Carrington. There’s a great little fight scene where Tommy uses his speed powers to save Katarina, but he can’t stop Jocasta from kicking Vision’s ass. Vision has no choice but to hand over control to Ultron, who orchestrates Katarina’s death. GODDAMN. And Jocasta isn’t happy about it, because she needs something from Katarina, and now she can’t get it because she vaporized her.
