Ron Watches Drag Race Philippines Season 4 Episode 5

Ghulli was sent home in the previous episode, and as the season progresses, we’re going to see more and more queens get sent home. Who’s going home next? Let’s find out!

After Ghulli’s elimination, the queens return to the Werk Room, and Bomba says in the confessional that Ghulli was one of the people closest to her in the competition. Andy is also hit hard by Ghulli’s elimination, since Ghulli is her drag daughter. At least, they didn’t repeat the Athena Dion and Juicy Love Dion storyline.

The next day in the Werk Room, the queens congratulate Katana on her second win and start discussing how they would fare if the next challenge is a comedy challenge. The queens think Taylor and Bomba would blossom in a comedy challenge, while they think Bhorj would struggle. I think so too!

Mama Pao’s entry cuts their discussion short as she tells them that they’re going to do a nautical-themed photoshoot. And since we’re in the Philippines, what that means is a bangka and water from a low-pressure hose, so it looks like someone is pissing on the queens. Also, since this is Drag Race Philippines, the audio is also fucked up. Maureen Biology wins this mini challenge, gets a cash prize, and nothing else because the Maxi Challenge is Snatch Game. I don’t know id they’re going to top the season three Snatch Game though.

During Mama Pao’s walkthrough, we find out that Bomba is doing Roderick Paulate, who is a certain generation of Filipinos’ main reference point when it comes to describing a gay man. Bhorj is doing Jennifer Coolidge, and…well. Okay. Taylor Sheesh is doing Ed Caluag rather than Taylor Swift and…well. She’s branching out, I guess. Merckz is doing Janina San Miguel of “My pamilee” fame, and I cannot believe that it’s been almost two decades since that happened? I am old. Mama Pao does have a great piece of advice for Merckz, pointing out that in this day and age, making fun of someone’s regional accent isn’t as funny as it was back then.

Snatch Game starts, and Taylor already has me cackling after she called Bhorj’s Jennifer Coolidge impression a dolphin. But the real challenge for these queens is not each other, but Rufa Mae Quinto, who is going to be with them as part of the panel. How are they going to avoid being overshadowed by her? She’s a comedic force!

And to be fair, some of the queens do manage to stand out, thanks to the editing. Merckz does okay, and so does Manza. Taylor was funnier in her confessionals than she was on the panel, and only became funny on the panel when she took off her pants. I couldn’t sit through Bhorj’s Jennifer Coolidge, and I think Bomba’s Roderick Paulate is going to land her in the bottom once more. All in all, this Snatch Game wasn’t as funny as season three’s, but it wasn’t a total wash.

The next day, as they prepare for the runway, the queens start talking about how they celebrate Christmas, since it’s such a big deal here in the country. We find out that both Maureen and Valeria come from broken families, and that Maureen’s family was at one point so saddled with debt that they couldn’t eat as often as they wanted.

This week’s runway theme is Christmas, and the looks I ended up liking were Maureen’s, Valeria’s, Manza’s, and Andy’s. After the runway, Katana, Maureen, and Valeria are declared safe, and I’m pretty sure that Bomba is going to be in the bottom and go home this episode.

Once the critiques start, it looks like Taylor and Bomba will be in the bottom, which I don’t have a problem with, but I just couldn’t understand the Bhorj praise, I didn’t find it funny at all, but maybe it was a different experience when you’re in the room with them. She even wins the Snatch Game, so I guess that’s that.

It’s Bomba and Andy in the bottom, and the two of them lip-sync to a Pilita Corrales song, which I think is just handing the win to Bomba. Once the lip sync starts, I’m not so sure, but I do like that the production is sticking to Filipino songs more and more, no matter how old it is. And it’s Andy who wins this lip sync, sending Bomba home.
