Ron Watches VisionQuest Episode 5

Yes another cliffhanger in the previous episode, with the show revealing that the Butcherbird Killer is Jocasta, and that her plans have just been spoiled by Ultron, who has taken control over Vision’s body. What’s going to happen now?

The episode starts with the rest of the AIs in the attic where Ultron used to be, and Friday is placing the blame on Vision, which is fair. They don’t dwell on it though, and try to figure out a way to get out of this, but Ultron’s locked them out of Vision’s real-time sensors. BUT! They do have access to Vision’s short-term memory, so they figure out a way to see what Ultron saw in the recent past.

Before we get into what Ultron did, I just wanna say I really liked how they did the visualization of this, with the AIs in color and Ultron and Tommy in black and white, since they’re seeing them from black and white CCTV footage. Now, as to what Ultron and Tommy talked about? We’re given an explanation as to why Vision saved him at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and we also get to see Tommy get the better of Ultron, by telling him that he’s miles away from understanding connection, while Vision is at the brink of it.

Ultron lets Tommy go, but not really, as he’s given his location to Paladin, who is trying to get to Vision first since his credo is that he always fulfills the terms of his contract. Desperate to get to Tommy, Vision suggest triggering the fail-safe that frees them from the attic, but would also unleash Ultron onto the digital world. Friday is against it, BUT Vision points out that Ultron wouldn’t want to just be in a sea of data, but would want to have a body.

Which leads to them figuring out that Ultron and Jocasta have already met, and they’re flirting. We also find that from wanting to eradicate humanity, Ultron has now become curious about what it feels like to be human, and just like Pinocchio, he wants to be a ~real boy~. And again, I really liked how they’ve visualized this, because I feel like I’m watching people watch actors act in a black box space, if that makes sense? I don’t even know if I used the right theater terms, but that’s what this reminds me of.

After seeing that whole stretch of foreplay, as Ultron called it, Vision and the rest of the AIs now realize that Ultron is going to ~elope~ with Jocasta, and that the two of them are going to decimate the world, if given the chance, so taking down the firewall and letting Ultron loose is definitely out of the question. However, that’s easy to say when you’re not facing Ultron, who’s now visited them in the attic and is trying to persuade Vision to let him go by dangling Tommy’s fate in the Paladin’s hands. Ultron ends up being persuasive, as Vision lowers the firewall.

Before Ultron can escape, Vision confronts him in the…foyer?…of his mind space, and promises that he will go after him and Jocasta once Tommy is saved. He lets Ultron escape into cyberspace, which Friday does not like at all. She breaks away from the AIs and goes into cyberspace to chase after Ultron herself. I wonder if this storyline is going to be resolved within the season!

Once Vision regains control of his body in the outside world, he finds himself in a cargo place to Madripoor alongside Lisa. They’re going to save Tommy!
