Here we go, it’s the second episode of the season! Let’s get right into it!
Lestat had just revealed his true vampire nature to his bandmates at the end of the previous episode. He’s also revealed to non-book readers that he and his mom have a…unique relationship. I am also expecting an equally chaotic second episode, given how the narration jumped here and there in the first episode.
We’re on the road as this episode opens, and while the narration isn’t a one-to-one from the book, it still feels very Lestat to me. Then we’re taken back to Auvergne, and while it’s not the action-packed wolf hunt of the book, it does establish how Gabrielle felt constricted in that household — I’ve at least gotten past that in my re-read.
As much as I’ve tried to avoid it, I have heard some complaints about the abridged wolf hunt, and I have to say I’m not mad about it being abridged. What’s more important to show, in my opinion, is the aftermath of that hunt, and I think it’s done well. Maybe they’re bludgeoning us a little with the Oedipus complex of it all compared to the book, but I’m fine with it.
Back in the modern world again, Lestat’s lawyer is fixing the mess with the entourage. An entourage that now includes Gabrielle. The band isn’t handling it well, but the three vampires in the bus sure are very blasé about it. However, Lestat’s flazéda demeanor eventually crumbles once he’s left alone with the band, and TC questions him about Louis. He does shut them up when he reads their minds, and while Alex walks away, I have a feeling he’ll come back.
We then see Lestat and Gabrielle hunting, before it’s cut short by a required meeting between Lestat and Thomas Pitt, the owner of the hotel where he disposed of the Tooth Team Fang Gang. And Thomas Pitt is no other than Louis, who recognizes that Lestat is pissy about the book. And then to reveal that he owns 45 percent of Lestat’s merch? The evil duck laugh I let out.
Then we get the scene that they released last year, where Daniel and Louis talk about the book. But this scene goes further — duh — and we find out that Louis has been seeing Claudia in the streets, or at least people who remind him of Claudia. We also find out that this isn’t a happy reunion between Louis and Daniel, as it’s just a cover for the Talamasca to sit down and corner Louis, because they want him to take care of their Detroit “problem”. And did they just kill David Talbot offscreen? But more importantly, that Detroit problem is Bruce. That Bruce.
